About us

The present owners bought this 17th Century wonder in November 2007, with one very simple vision, to offer more than just a place to eat and drink. They wanted to create a happy and relaxing meeting ground for everyone to gather, from walkers and their dogs, friends and families to work colleagues and business people, whether it be for a special occasion with fun, laughter and tears or simply to sit quietly in a cosy corner and read the paper in front of a roaring open fire with a pint or glass of wine in hand!.

Unfortunately I tried here for a breakfast and they really missed the mark on this occasion. I am very happy to wait for my food when the quality is up to scratch but my order must have gotten lost. I mentioned it and it was chased up and came a bit later. I ordered smoked salmon and poached eggs on toast. This was very very disappointing, toast was burned, eggs were rock hard and cold, the salmon just wanted any good.. such a shame as I imagine a few drinks here would be okay but you could tell it's not on top form with how staff were communicating and how manic it felt even early on in the day. Got a refund no questions asked so a star remains for that but unfortunately wouldn't bother again.

It was the first time I had visited this area, which is noted for its great walks and scenery. Feeling a tad peckish, I had the great fortune to come across this pub. It has 3 seating areas, 2 of which you need to book a table. The 3rd in the bar area is first come, first served. All 3 areas are also dog friendly. The menu has a good choice of dishes to choose from. I found the food to be well presented and generously portioned. It came in good time and was delicious, with a real sense of being homemade. The service from the staff was great. In short, give it a go you won't be disappointed.

Very disappointing food! The pate I had for my starter tasted like it came out of a tin but the beef steak was the worst by far! It was tough and tasted like it was a few days old. I ate all the vegetables as we were really hungry after our hike and even though I left most of the beef, I still felt unwell afterwards and it took two days for my stomach to recover. I really do not recommend the food - the beer was nice and the atmosphere very cosy but I have never had a worse meal and would have been better off just skipping the food altogether !

Stopped in for dinner on a weeknight and was glad we booked ahead. The food was great - I had a pizza and the mushroom starter. Both were delicious and is definitely recommend the mushrooms! We also weren't rushed out despite them being busy while we waited out of the rain for the bus time (much appreciated)!

The room was spacious, comfortable and spotless! All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were unfortunate enough to be there in high winds, the hotel lost all power but we were served drinks and sandwiches, which were delicious. We were all very well cared for and ended up having a laugh. You couldn't choose a better location!! Breakfast was divine, served in a beautiful room. We'd definitely return. Thank you!
