Located a short walk from Hull’s Train’s Station, we are in the heart of the city surrounded by most of the city’s best entertainment venues, from Hull Bonus Arena, Hull Ice Arena, The MKM Stadium, Hull New Theatre, Hull City Hall and the Marina.
Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure we have so much in the area for you to enjoy and explore. Since Hull was awarded the ‘City of Culture’ back in 2017 the city received a much needed £220m investment which has greatly improved and developed our lovely little city.
In the aftermath of City of Culture, we are now a fantastic home of the arts, theatre performances, award winning museums, sporting teams, casino and concerts. We are now a place boasting many fantastic places to eat and drink, we are always happy to recommend our favourites for you.
Please note we are a Dog Friendly Bar, be warned staff will fuss over your dogs all night!
The Whittington & Cat Bar is open Monday – Thursday evenings from 5pm till 10pm and open Friday 4pm -12am and all day Saturday and Sunday. Please note this is reflected in our checking times too, as the check in is via the Bar, we may be able to arrange earlier check in’s upon request.
Our bar offers premium beers, selections of spirits and wines along with homemade food.
Please note, during the Bar's closed hours the building is unmanned, we do not offer a 24hr reception. However we do have a member of our team on call 24/7 if you ever need assistance during your stay.
WHITTINGTON AND CAT
A little history of The Whittington & Cat. This historical building which has a rich history located on the old docklands of Hull and was damaged in both world wars.
It was purchased derelict back in 2007 and then respectfully restored and transformed into the guest house and bar it is today.
Built in the 1830s, the original name of the tavern was The Whittington Inn, with suggestions there was a pub on the site previously. We’ve always been told it was called The Whittington because of Dick Whittington and his cat. Rumour has it that he apparently visited the site, therefore that’s a suggestion where the name came from.
Dick Whittington and his cat is the English folklore surrounding the real–life Richard Whittington, a wealthy merchant and late Lord Mayor of London.
The story goes he visited areas renting out his cat to cull the rising rat populations, and while sadly there is little evidence to suggest he did own a cat, there is real possibility he visited Hull though. As a merchant, he most likely would have visited Hull’s ports, and the pub is situated close to the marina where he may have traded.

We went in after not having been in since the 90s (not for any particular reason, it just hadn't been on our radar for a very long time). SOOOO glad we did. Friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks and brilliant food. My friend eats meat, but I'm vegan. There wasn't just a vegan choice...there were loads of vegan choices! Vegan pie, kiev, burger, ch*cken burger, mushroom stroganoff and sausage and mash as well as vegan desserts. I had the half pound vegan cheezeburger which was really lovely. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back.
I can’t comment on rooms, nor location really (the location benefitted me massively, but maybe it’s a tad out of the heart of the city centre?) however, I can fully recommend this pub for its food, its warm welcoming atmosphere and it’s wonderful friendly landlady. I came here after enduring a long drive in bad weather, to refuel myself with some heart pub grub before venturing onwards and I was not disappointed. The pub itself is stuck a lovely little time warp, as the establishment still has separate rooms like a snug and a lounge - something that pubs lack these days. This place has real character and I’ll 100% remember it for if I venture to Hull again. A massive thankyou to the landlady and her chef - from the coach driver.
The hotel is at a very good location, but it seems a shady place, not recommended for families. No staff on front desk at night and morning. The room was very poor specially the mattress and there was a smell from sheets. Hated it.
Nice place to stay. The pub does food in the evening. The only thing they could do is offer a breakfast hamper of some sort that you could collect from the bar the night before as we struggled to find anywhere in town to get anything on a Sunday morning.

**PLEASE NOTE**
There are extensive roadworks happening within' the proximity of the building until 2025. The usual road to the pub is closed and there is a diversion in place, don't worry, this doesn't make the journey any longer!
