Nestled beneath Buckden Pike, The White Lion Inn is a former drovers hostelry set in the splendid surroundings of Upper Wharfedale.
Taken over and refurbished during 2015 the Inn has been tastefully restored to its traditional form with original beams, open log fire and stoneflagged floors. Our nine luxury ensuite rooms blend modern facilities with traditional Yorkshire charm.
Hand pulled ales, regularly changing fresh cooked menu and luxurious accommodation means The White Lion Inn is the ideal destination. With glorious walks on our door step it’s also perfect for dogs and their walkers, who are all welcome to stay.
I was interested in visiting this inn, but having read the reviews and consequent comments from the owner, I have reconsidered. This owner sounds very much like a temperamental artist, the food looks delicious and well crafted, but his replies indicate that he doesn't seem to have a customer service penchant. It does seems that he may prioritize guests in order of revenue value where anticipated spend takes priority and told a party seeking drinks only that they would have to wait. I mean, how long does it take to pull a pint? In my book all customers are equal and should be treated so, My money, if spending 200 for a meal or 10 pounds for just a couple of pops, is equally deserving of courtesy and best service. I, like many others, will shout praises from the hilltops of a good experience, I sincerely believe in supporting excellence as a regular patron and also as a spokesperson. In reviewing the owner comments, it sounds as if he is under extreme stress and this could be why he is selling The White Lion. I wait with baited breath for the next owners. I do expect a condescending reply from him; that seems to be par for the course for anyone who to expresses a negative experience. My negative experience of finding out what type of attitude lies on the underbelly of this establishment didn't cost me anything, since I did my due diligence before daring to enter this lion's den.
For many years this was our favourite pub in the dales for the cosy atmosphere, stunning location and lovely food. Since having children we’ve not managed to get there for a while so were so excited to take some friends to the pub of legends. Unfortunately the staff said they were too busy to serve us drinks for a while (there were only 2 tables in) and when my husband was surprised at this the gentleman was very rude and aggressive and basically told him to leave. We were so surprised at this as it was always such a lovely pub! We had some very tired little children with us so were just getting ready to leave outside and he tried to slam the door on us. As it was a soft close door it didn’t have quite the effect he was after but all the same, we felt very unwelcome and a bit silly for telling our friends how wonderful this place was. I’m sure the food is lovely, but no hospitality place should be so complacent that they have to be so unpleasant and unwelcoming to people stopping for drinks and not food. We walked down the valley to Buckden and had a lovely pint served with a smile! Kindness doesn’t cost anything.
Visited the White Lion for Sunday lunch. Beautiful drive to get there and a truly delicious meal - flavours were 👌🏻 and food very well presented. Would 100% recommend. Service also great. Haven’t rated rooms as didn’t stay.
My wife and I did not stay - we only came for dinner. We didn't have a reservation but the manager found a table for us. And am I glad he did! For one, the refurbishment to this old pub has made it very cosy and comfortable and, as a result, the atmosphere was great. The food was next-level. I've eaten in Michelin-starred restaurants where the food wasn't as good as what we were served here. I'd probably make a reservation in the future, though. We got lucky on our visit, due to a cancellation, but book ahead because you don't want to miss out on this place!
Great place to stay in the Yorkshire Dales. It is in some really amazing countryside and there is a stream with waterfalls just over the road. The room I had looked out over the road but noise was certainly not an issue. There is not a lot of traffic on that road. The room was a decent size and the bed was extremely comfortable. Smallish bathroom but a really good shower. The food was absolutely wonderful. Tasty, plentiful and perfectly cooked. I would not hesitate to stay again.
