Set in The South Downs National Park, this refined 350-year-old pub with rooms is 2 miles from the 17th-century Petworth House and Park, and 7 miles from Bignor Roman Villa.
Settled in the sleepy village of Tillington, near Petworth, West Sussex, The Horse Guards Inn is a 350 year old pub in The South Downs National Park. With rolling views down the Rother Valley, the Horse Guards got its name in the 1840's, when part the household cavalry would frequent the Inn, while their horses rested on grass in the grounds of the Petworth Estate under the watchful eye of Lord Egremont.
The pub is relaxed, friendly and informal with wooden tables and chairs, oak beams and stripped floorboards. In winter you can roast chestnuts foraged from Petworth Park on one of the open log fires, play board games at the bar and forget about outside with a warm glass of spiced cider.
On sunnier days, enjoy the hidden garden slumped in deck chairs or on straw-bale seats or have lunch at shaded tables on benches covered with sheepskins, eating beside the herbs and vegetables you’ll find on your plate.

Excellent! Staff were so incredibly friendly, great atmosphere and an absolutely excellent roast dinner. Loved the decor, loved the cosiness and loved the food and staff. Brilliant!
Fantastic. Everything about this place is beautifully done, plus it has a magic ingredient - wonderful hosts and team. A full restaurant tells its own story and I can see why it's busy. A 5 star experience.
What can I say if I could give 10 stars I would have done I had a work party here on Friday night. The service so the food was amazing. U had the pumpkin soup followed by the trout and the flavours were out of this world. I'm just annoyed I didn't get a chance yo try the puddings as I was so full. Really would recommend this place highly. I hsvnt had food like this in a long time . Well done to all of the team and the kitchen staff.
Had lunch here last week for a special occasion for a few people. Ambience and food were excellent; food came out quickly and everyone really enjoyed it. Most of the staff were super but a couple of them were really unwelcoming at first and didn’t seem pleased to see us at all; I felt like I was getting in their way. Again when we were leaving a couple of the team just looked past us, rather than saying ‘thanks/bye’ etc. first impressions and how you’re made to feel as a customer are so important. My comments are made in the spirit of giving constructive feedback, not as a complaint, and I hope the owners will take on board. We would definitely go back.
My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here this week and we were absolutely blown away by the quality of the dishes we ordered. Beautifully presented and incredible flavours. A friendly welcome, great service all night and a lovely, cozy atmosphere made our night perfect! We look forward to going back.
