I rarely write bad reviews but I felt this was important to share We visited the Fox today as a treat from my parents for a replacement Christmas lunch. We’ve been to the pub before for food which last time we said was well over priced for what it was. We thought we’d give it another go as often things improve. Sadly this time that wasn’t the case, three of us ordered the turkey roast which I’m sad to say was the worst roast I’ve ever had. The Yorkshire pudding was flat, overcooked and completely covered in dry mixed herbs from a supermarket, so much so it couldn’t rise in the oven. The turkey was either microwaved or so overcooked it was dry and inedible (my mum couldn’t cut half of hers let alone eat it) and the roast potato’s were definitely not cooked that day, they had a translucent look to them which tells me they’ve been sitting around a while. The veg was basic peas and sweet corn frozen in a bag. The gravy also had so much dry herbs in we couldn’t eat that either. For nearly £16 whoever cooked this and found it acceptable to serve up should be ashamed of themselves. We felt taken advantage of and it all left a really bad taste in our mouths (excuse the punn) Suffice to say we didn’t even bother with pudding The staff in fairness were really good and offered apology but we all walked out hungry as we couldn’t eat much, with no offer of a refund. None of us will be back and as locals we won’t be recommending it either, for a drink I’d say it’s a nice atmosphere but for food I’d avoid completely.
I visited here today for the first time with a group of friends (we had been staying at the local Butlins resort as part of a hen party) and honestly, I couldn't recommend it more! We all had the roast dinner followed by pudding (crumble for me) and it was absolutely delicious. The owner was so helpful too and made us feel really welcome through out. The Fox is truly a gem and somewhere you won't regret visiting :)
We were staying in a beautiful cottage nearby and came here twice during the week - once for dinner and once for lunch. On both occasions the food was excellent. On the first occasion we booked online for a table for four for dinner. N problem except that when we arrived early that evening we hadn't taken into account how busy the place would be. As the table was next to the bar it was quite noisy and a bit cramped. But the quality of the food made up for that. I had the belly pork and washed it down with Timothy Taylor's Havercake ale. Delicious. On the second occasion we came with the extended family for lunch and we sat further away from the bar in a side room (as such). This was much better, being a lot quieter. All 7 of us chose different things to eat and drink. We particularly found the dirty chips to be fun. And there were a lot of them. Service on both times we visited was warm, friendly and efficient.
A lovely place. 1st time there but have booked a table for February. The staff are so friendly and the food delicious. It's full of history a diamond of a place hidden down a side street. A great atmosphere as you walk in. Todd our server was attentive and knew its history. Went In for the second time today 28/2/'23 well it was even better than the first . Todd was just as good and funny. In fact all the servers were great and attentive. The food from starter to dessert was the best around. Definitely be there again. Pity there weren't 10 **********s today's meals added.
Love this place! We were happy to come again after re-opening. Refreshed interior and new menu definitely made us happy. So nice to sit in the garden with lighted bulbs. Proper fish&chips, burgers. My family was absolutely happy!
