The Trowel and Hammer is an attractive, part thatched pub situated in the picturesque village of Cotton approximately 6 miles north of Stowmarket. It is a listed building oozing with character and charm not to mention original oak beams and open fires.
As a traditional country pub, the Trowel and Hammer offers a cosy rural atmosphere with real ales and quality home cooked food. We have a comfortable bar with a separate restaurant and a superb beer garden - ideal for al fresco drinking and dining during the warmer months.
We welcome families and dogs so why not come along and enjoy great food and drink in relaxed surroundings with a warm welcome guaranteed from Abi and Elliott.
Whether you choose to eat in our relaxing bar or comfortable restaurant (The Cotton Club), you are guaranteed quality food freshly prepared on the premises with an emphasis on using locally sourced, seasonal produce wherever possible.
We serve sandwiches and a selected menu at lunchtimes with a full menu available in the evening which changes regularly, depending on the season and what fresh produce is available to us. In addition to the main menu we have a separate Children’s menu and a special Sunday Lunch menu featuring plated roast dinners as well as some favourites from our main menu.

Popped in n the off chance just before Christmas to try the new Pizza. Food was good, service was fair though a little confusing. Drinks from one part and food from elsewhere. Will be back when reopen in the spring. Was truly wonderful that it’s reopened and full of life
So good to see the Trowel and Hammer back open for business again. The changes are great. The food was absolutely delicious and the service couldn't be faulted. I am definitely looking forward to coming back next year.
So good to have such an attractive pub back together after too long. Keep it up Freddie
Open fire, lovely atmosphere, graduation staff, awesome pizza, laughs what more can you ask for. Awesome pub! Glad we have one locally now they are the backbone to combat mental health, loneliness. Thbak you.
Over priced. In honesty they try hard, but a bit amateur. Coffee was v poor (their equipment is designed for home use, so they couldn't keep up with demand). Coffee/walnut cake hadn't been made very well, but tasted OK - at least it was fresh. Decor a bit tired and in need of an overhaul. Interesting collection of unusual teapots was the highlight, as for the cafe experience, Sorry, but I won't be revisiting.
