About us

A traditional and historic building, it still maintains the original archway where horse drawn carriages would enter into the rear courtyard.

Naturally the Inn has evolved over the centuries and now boasts 25 well-appointed bedrooms, a restaurant, bar and coffee lounge as well as a cosy snug. It provides the perfect sanctuary after spending an energetic day perhaps climbing Walbury Hill, the highest in England, enjoying the views from Silbury hill, communing with our ancient past at Avebury Stone Circle or having had a day at Newbury races, only 8 miles away.

Popped in for food on way between London and Bristol. Squash and sweet potato tagine delicious, followed by sticky toffee pudding with icecream- also great. They add auto 10 percent service charge to bill which is cheeky as pay as you are ordering (at bar before you have tasted anything). I initially asked them to remove tip but was happy to pay on dessert as food was delicious. This was definitely for the food quality and not the table service which was pretty much non-existent. Recommend ordering your food and drinks at the bar because it will take a long time if waiting to be served at the table. They also expect you to collect your drinks from the bar. However food quality was worth the slight inconvenience.

Just locates at the centre of the town, we stay for 3 nights and had dinner for the Christmas eve. Lovely meals. The breakfasts are great and very tasty. The rooms are good but quite loud when the fire doors shut.

We visited for a meal and a drink. The bar and restaurant are lovely. Hearing thr people checking in, they have a lot of repeat stays. The staff did a really great job. When one was busy at the bar, another stopped what they were doing to serve.

Nice pub. Would not advise sitting in the pub area to eat before lunch. Very noisy to the point we had to ask a staff member to please try not throw the knives and forks around whilst cleaning for service. Sounds trivial but conversation was very difficult. Had a retort of it's my job and needs to be done. Fair enough. Would go back but only to the restaurant.

Very well located pub/ restaurant/ hotel, rooms are of a very good size, good bed, very nice bathroom with shower, TV on the wall, lots of wardrobe space. Excellent staff, nothing was too much for them, very helpful and friendly, good selection of beers and spirits. I will definitely be back sometime in the future.
