About us

Legend says that the pub was originally used by royalty, highwaymen and travellers as a rest stop and up until recently, the Blacksmith opposite was still operating.

Our famous visitors are said to include the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin who had a residence in nearby Thaxted and Edward VII the then Prince of Wales on his frequent visits to see his good friend Sir Walter Gilbey at Elsenham Hall.

We are the current inn-keepers of this beautiful Grade II Listed building and aim to serve you with fine ale and great home-cooked food and friendly hospitality. Our food is fresh and purchased locally whenever possible.

We have a large beer/events garden with plenty of space for the kids to enjoy themselves, and when the weathers good, the bouncy castle is up. We’re also dog friendly but please keep them under control.

Booked for a Sunday lunch last week for myself and my mate. Bit of a trek from the airport. With the walk done the food was excellent, beers reasonably priced, staff fantastic. Will be returning. Many thanks for a great afternoon.

Loved this experience. Great family run pub with good food, good beer and great owners. Wish I had more time to spend discussing the history of the pub over a few pints.

Very rude service. I asked if vegan options but the conversation became very blunt, was told no options, they didn't allow me to look through the menu for a jacket potato of even a drink and some peanuts for even a minute. She said ''this is ridiculous'. Then was totally ignored by both the staff serving, they just left me standing there while serving my friends, it was highly embarrassing. Might be taking further action but certainly won't be eating there again.

Had an enjoyable lunch here. The premises was clean and the staff friendly. The food was good with a moderate portion, well cooked. I would have liked a little garnish with my ham egg a chips being my only negative observation. The beer was tasty and the ale well kept. I would certainly dine here again

Lovely English pub, in an ancient and characteristic building (not sure whether it's listed). Good food, honest prices. I had the chicken breast, the daily special. was OK, a bit dry but tasty. I asked with vegetables instead of the salad. They were delicious, possibly one of the first pub where they were cooked food and they were tasting something. Just a bit disappointed at the last with the dessert. They don't seem to have anything home made other than their androgen cheese cake. I went for it, but the chocolate sauce was the one suitable for ice creams which was not marrying up with the rest. The save with the whisked spray cream. Service is OK, but perfectible. The pub can be reached by a public footpath from the main Stansted terminal. So if your flight is delayed, you may consider a 15 mins walk to eat healthier and cheaper food.
