We visited this pub for food for a special occasion and we chose this place as we have had great meals there before, however we were extremely disappointed. When you walk in there is a sign on the door saying tables have a maximum of 2 hours, we didn’t receive our starters until an hour after being sat down. We had to go to the bar multiple times to order drinks as no one was monitoring the table. Our order was messed up and when the food came out, it was missing food which we had to request for as per the explanations on the menu, the food tasted like it had been cooked earlier on in the day and then warmed up so it was dry and stale. Overall it was a very underwhelming experience and we were so shocked as it has been so good the previous times we visited. The food isn’t cheap, but the food we received wasn’t worth the amount detailed on the menu. It may be because it was a Sunday evening, but there were a lot of staff working and it wasn’t full so we were very disappointed.

Compared to the last visit to The Swan at Whittington (3-4 years ago), I left disappointed. The Haddock Goujons (starter) were extremely oily and the batter very thick compared to the size of the fish pieces. I opted for the roast lamb Sunday roast for my main course. The meat was quite grisly and very tough. The roast potatoes were very oily. The selection of side vegetables was massive for 1 person but the presentation was not great. The vegetables appeared to have simply been piled into a dish and were very messy (everything smothered in soggy cauliflower cheese). The staff were pleasant enough but once the mains were brought to the table, we didn't see the staff again. No-one checked to see if we were happy with our food. No-one asked if we wanted more drinks. Once finished, we waited about 15 minutes for the table to be cleared. The bill was provided quite quickly but then no-one came to take payment. The restaurant was extremely hot. Although the air-conditioning unit over the bar/tills was working, the unit in the main restaurant was turned off and all the windows were closed (around 23'C outside).

Friendly but slow service and poor food Really wanted to give a better review, as our initial interaction with the staff was really promising and helpful. We got given the perfect table as we were with our puppy, and they were very welcoming. Our drinks order came quickly (although we had to send them back initially as they were wrong), and our order was taken really quickly. Unfortunately that where it went down hill. The meals took ages. Nearly 40 mins to arrive. Regrettably it wasn’t worth the wait. I ordered the sirloin steak as medium and it came almost double well done. Hard and dry. I was gutted. I was really looking forward to it. My other half had the pork Sunday roast, and whilst the rest of the meal was really nice, the roast potatoes were awful. They seemed to have spent way too long under a heat lamp, and the you struggled to cut into them. Once you did get in, there was barely any potato inside. There appeared to be no management in the restaurant that night. Nobody took responsibility when I mentioned about my steak. Just a quick embarrassed sorry, but nothing was done about it. It’s a real shame to have to say this. Especially as the staff were so friendly, when you did manage to speak to them and also initially.

The perfect Christmas dinner out! We’ve been to the Swan for 3 years in a row now for Christmas, and have never had a bad experience. It makes the day completely stress free & the food and service is fantastic. Ordering on the day makes things really simple if you’re in a larger group & the staff are always so helpful and accommodating. Set meals and standard menu now have a 10% service charge added, but always more than happy to pay it for the friendly and quick service.
