About us

Originally named the Fox and Hounds, this pub restaurant used to be run by the Smith family during the late 19th Century. Although by 1894 it was only the father, William and his son, Arthur who were still running The Shy Horse. Today guests at The Shy Horse enjoy an easily accessible venue with its own gardens.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Our visit was a family gathering, with the full range of ages attending. Clearly a popular place, the restaurant was busy, so we were expecting our order of 17 different meals to take a while and probably come out at different times. Despite all that, they delivered all our meals quickly and together. All the meals were great, decent sized portions too. We had lots of different choices between us, steaks, fish and chips, burgers - all really nice with no issues which, for one of our family gatherings, is quite an achievement! Even my 6yo food connoisseur commented on how tasty the sauce was in his tomato pasta, and my 13yo had no comments to make - praise indeed!! Nice helpful staff. Taking an order of that size can’t be easy, but they handled it really well. Some trips to the kitchen to check availability, a couple of last minute adjustments and everyone was happy. We felt welcome and looked after. An unprompted dessert tribute to the 50yo birthday boy was a nice touch, well done. Top marks for food and service. A bit of a queue at the bar at one point, maybe one more person serving might have eased the wait a little, but it was no biggie. We’ll certainly be back and, if the small water flow issue in the gents is resolved, then it’ll be the full 5 stars next time I’m sure.

Spent a day in Chessington World of Adventures and then gathered in The Shy Horse for a slap up meal. Our choice of food, funny enough, was not that varied. The eight of us had bugers or the beef and ale pie. The food was quite good and there was enough of it. The burgers seemed to go down well. The pies tasted nice but the beef could have done with an extra 30mins cooking to make it really tender, as it was a wee bit tough but still nice. My only small complaint really is that there was no table service, as in a waiter or waitress taking your order. I say this because the place is set out as a restaurant/pub. It was a quiet night there, as it was a Monday, so it just would have added some more professionalism to the place. The staff were friendly however and I would certainly go back.

I really never leave bad reviews, but this one really takes the biscuit! Paid £35 for 2 takeaway roasts, mine was the Turkey breast with maple bacon at just under £17. Well, as from the picture what turned up looked like the last scraps of meat, no maple bacon, no stuffing and no extra gravy I had selected. Half burnt veg and a table spoon of greens. To say I am shocked at how this turned up, I had to laugh because otherwise I would have cried! I’m 8 months pregnant and have been unable to go out for a nice pub roast so needed to order in, but to end up with missing items and a completely awful state of a roast dinner that looked like scraps I would give to the dog… have eaten here a number of times but will not be returning, if you want good quality food please just go elsewhere!

Went with my mother using a complimentary 40% discount voucher recent on an email. Although very short staffed the service was reasonable. Fortunately we were in time to have the last two home-made pies of the day each, beef in red wine sauce, as our main course which was extremely hot and flavoursome. One served with spring onion mash, the other with chunky fries. Both also had a good selection of fresh, steamed vegetables. We both had a starter each, again very tasty! Crispy fried brie bites & creamy garlic mushrooms. Only drawback were the group of children running through from the garden and leaving the doors open causing it to be a little chilly, but soon rectified by the waitress.
