Opened as the Hope Beer House in the 1870s, this pub got its mock-Tudor panelling between the wars. In 2010, closure loomed, but locals clubbed together and bought the lease (adding the freehold in 2015)
In 2010 there was an imminent danger of the pub closing and becoming a Restaurant, however after some quick negotiation by a group of customers, we were given the option of buying the lease and operating the pub.
A company "48 West Limited" was formed to pursue this possibility and on Monday 8th Feb 2010 the company signed forms to become the tenant of The Hope on a 20 year 'free of all tie' lease from Punch Taverns. We then bought the fixtures and fittings, stock etc from the holding company that operated the pub.
We have made, and will continue to make, substantial investments in the building, the stock, the staff and generally the future. The pub has now gained many new friends as customers and has won the odd prize or two.
In 2015 we finally achieved our objective and purchased the freehold of The Hope. The pub is now owned entirely by the shareholders of 48 West Ltd. The company has a restriction of 24% on the level of shares an individual can hold and we currently have 45 shareholders ensuring that this pub for the community has a healthy future.
We have now in 2018, commenced the construction of new Gents, Ladies & disabled loos and replacing our main storage facility.

Nice pub, but they don’t have Guinness beer. Cider pineapple recommended by the barman was great, thank you for recommendation. Free parking but you have to register your number plate. Clean toilets Overall was ok.
Famed for its quality and range of beers, it is a wet led pub. Though there is a good menu at lunchtimes and simple pot meals in the evening. Children are not allowed and dogs must be kept on a short lead.
As far as beer goes, this place cannot be beaten. It always has a superb selection of ales and something for everyone, no matter what your taste. Its range of snacks is outstanding, and overall the quality of the food gets better every time we eat there. They also have a beer festival at the end of each month which is usually so popular most of the stock is gone in a day and a half. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, especially if you have even a passing interest in a pint 😉
Craft Beer & Tasty food! Everyone is welcome at this pub, no matter your culture etc. if you want traditional pub, go there. We like the HotPots and I especially enjoy the craft beers. Staff are friendly and customers are relaxed & very civilised. Dogs are welcome too.
Excellent pub near Carshalton Station. Seven cask beers on handpump when I visited including a porter and a stout. Three real ciders also available. Lots of outdoor seating most of it covered. Very friendly and helpful staff.
