About us

The area behind the church is the oldest part of Bowness, a delightful web of narrow streets known as Lowside, which gives an idea of what the village was like before the arrival of the railway.

The hotel is ideally situated; a stone’s throw away from Lake Windermere and a two minute walk from Bowness' varied shops and wide range of excellent restaurants. A large municipal car park is a couple of minutes' walk from the hotel.

The comfortable bedrooms are all en-suite, with colour television, hair dryers, and tea and coffee making facilities. The 21 rooms are centrally heated and comprise twin, double and family rooms.

Please be advised that the hotel operates a busy programme of music and entertainment with a late license every night, allowing residents to enjoy our lively and friendly atmosphere free of charge and the venue is extremely popular at weekends.

In the morning a hearty breakfast will set you up to appreciate the superb local walks and attractions.

We offer FREE superb leisure facilities at an adjacent hotel, which include indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gymnasium.

Great weekend ,excellent service ,staff were very helpful .Lovely breakfast with friendly staff .Bar meals and drinks were very reasonably priced with the 10 % residents discount .The entertainment was excellent .Location couldn't be better .We marked the room down because the bed was very uncomfortable .A double but it was 2 singles put together.

We went to a family wedding at Windermere so chose The Stags Head for a two night stay. Booking-in was a little hit and miss, with that staff being outside, smoking. Once she got sorted and gave us advice / instructions, we went to a very clean / tidy four-poster large room with good facilities. The breakfast is absolutely first class with all you need to enjoy it. Sadly, no evening meal which provides a benefit to going out to find another great place locally (Review to follow). Overall, the Stags is dripping in atmosphere and history, going back centuries. There's a basement for a popular night club along with drinking hours to 01:00. Live music is stopped at 00:00hrs so sleeping is not a problem. A great place on the shore of Lake Windermere with plenty to enjoy which only 'The Lakes' can provide.

Loud noise from bar below the room. Live music on late prevented sleep until after midnight on Friday and Saturday. Loud water hammer in radiators at 3am made us wake up again. Tired hotel. Hotel overpriced for the quality of the offering. Good breakfast though, but v poor coffee.

This place is very much your typical local. Which I love it's a really welcoming and nice pub. It also does really good pub food and has options for people with allergies. Very nice and helpful staff. Also dog friendly. Extremely impressed with this pub will certainly be returning.
