About us

The Spruce Goose Basingstoke restaurant Beefeater

Welcome to the Spruce Goose Beefeater, the number one spot for top quality steaks, pub classics and great drinks in Basingstoke. Whether you’re looking for a big breakfast to set you up for the day or a relaxing dinner after exploring Hampshire, we’re the place to be.

Our team

We have an award-winning team who’ll spruce up any meal with their fantastic service and attention to detail. Our team are all locals who have been with us for years, including our fantastic kitchen manager, Paul Lumley, who has been cooking the best meals for all our guests for over 20 years! If you have any questions about Basingstoke or you’re looking for places to visit after your meal, our friendly team are the best people to talk to.

We’ve partnered with Dove House School Academy, a local specialist school that supports children with learning difficulties. We give practical help, training and development to students interested in a career in hospitality.

Our location

Our namesake, the Spruce Goose, was a legendary Howard Hughes H-4 Hercules aircraft built in 1946. While our restaurant isn’t quite as old as that, we’ve been flying high since 1985 and we’ve been serving the best quality dinners, hosting nights out and been a welcoming spot for the whole community for over 35 years.

We’re a big restaurant with 200 seats, a large 200-seater pub garden with decking and a comfy bar complete with a warm fireplace and BT Sports on the screens. We’ve split our restaurant across three levels. Generally, we try and keep the bar area a more relaxed, low-key space for chilling out. We usually reserve our upper floors for business meetings and other gatherings. Our ground and mid-levels tend to be a bit busier, which is where we save space for parties, buffets and family meals.

We have a lot of room but we’re a popular spot – it always pays to book ahead, especially if you’re thinking of planning an event with us.

Make sure to take a look at our offers page for all our latest deals and promotions.

Why we love Basingstoke

There’s so much to do in this beautiful part of Hampshire, no matter what kind of trip you’re after! We’re in the heart of Jane Austen country, which means trips to manors, parks and much more. Festival Mall Shopping Centre is only a mile away with all your high street favourites, and we’re only a 45-minute drive away from amazing beaches at Southampton and Portsmouth.

Closer to home, the Spruce Goose is only down the street from a leisure centre with indoor sky diving, a bowling alley, aqua arena, gym, ice skating rink and a large bingo hall. There’s also a cinema and plenty of other shops – you couldn’t ask for a better spot for things to do before a meal.

We’re also great halfway stop for a bite to eat if you’re on the way to Gatwick Airport, Cornwall or headed to the seaside. Plus, we’re only a five-minute drive away from Basingstoke Town Centre itself.

What a disappointing family Christmas Dinner for 8 adults. My inlaws always pick here otherwise I wouldn't keep coming back. Food is either average or lowsy. Some staff are great some are rude and useless. Good luck otherwise

Had a great Sunday birthday meal here. Glad I booked as it got really busy around 1pm The service was excellent and friendly, the meals were very good. Only real negative is the condition of the premises. Outside looked tired and scruffy, inside there was a massive hole in the ceiling by the entrance where they have clearly had some roof issues that needs addressing. Also the bench seats we were sat on clearly need replacing as the faux leather had worn away and was uncomfortable. Would be great if they could reinvest some money into the place.

Adam was particularly helpful in helping us made decisions on food and informative about the steaks :) servers were friendly and sat us quite quickly - but would recommend booking to avoid disappointment

Went for a meal after a lovely afternoon at the theatre and was seated straight away without booking when the restaurant was very busy. Everyone we came in to contact with from the general manager, to the bar staff and waitress were exceptionally friendly and pleasant. The food was great, and I was pleased to be allowed to thank Paul the kitchen manager, and his team at the servery. Really lovely team and we will defiantly return again very soon. Lovely atmosphere and food! Well done Team Spruce! 👏💞
