About us

Throughout this time their aims have been simple - to create a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere and to offer experiences that will encourage diners and guests to return again and again.

Having featured in the good food guides for a number of years, in 1995 Ray and Jane decided that they would rather rely on word of mouth to spread their reputation for excellence and no longer apply for inclusion.

Walkers, anglers, diners, all these and more, enjoy a great welcome in The Sportsman’s Arms bar. Once over the threshold there’s a tempting range of dishes for everyone from the peckish to the ravenous to enjoy with a wide choice of shellfish and seafood always on the menu.

15 wines are available by the glass, to perfectly accompany any dish, and we take just as much pride in the beer we serve including local ales from Timothy Taylors and the Black Sheep brewery at Masham.

In winter a roaring log fire creates a warm and cosy refuge from the elements. In warmer months you can enjoy your drink and meal outside, surrounded by the sights and sounds of summer.

Exceptional pub,/hotel in a delightful position in the Dales, close to Pateley Bridge, a lovely walk down the river Nidd and arrive at The Sportsman for an excellent lunch menu, lunch specials in the bar and a fabulous pint of Boltmaker or an good selection of wine. An atmosphere of quiet quality in a wonderful location close to the river and beautiful walks near Gouthwaite reservoir, will be back, well done

A wonderful venue for a delicious meal and/or a drink. A relaxing atmosphere with friendly, personable, attentive but not intrusive staff. Would highly recommend.

Enjoyable one night stay at this gastro pub. The hotel / pub is in a remote village in a beautiful area, certainly off the beaten track. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and very quiet - lovely. The menu for dinner was excellent, the quality of the food at both dinner & breakfast was top notch. It's a family run business, everyone is very friendly and professional. Prices are on the high side, but so is the quality. I would happily return, which is the ultimate recommendation.

Great location and lots of parking. Friendly and helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was good. Wine very nice. Nice to be able to include dog. Some vegetarian choices but not a lot and need expanding but what we had was good. Everything worked fine. Shower worked well. Nice toiletries. Bed comfortable. Easy check out and check in. Would go back for another one night stay.

I stayed here with a friend end of May (27-28.5 to be precise). We were on a motorbike tour back from Scotland on our last night before we had to take the ferry next day from Hull back home. This was - by sheer luck - the best stay and worthy of the last day of a fantastic trip. The hotel is located in a painfully beautiful area in Yorkshire. In a rather remote area and close to be a magic place. Our room was great, food was fantastic (the beer as well as the Whiskey). But I have to stress the that the staff was beyond excellent. We were welcomed in a warm way and everybody was nice, warm, caring and professional. OK - the check-in took a moment, but who cares when you can have a pint in the meantime. Next morning we came an half hour too early for breakfast - but again, just nice and warm service. I will hopefully return to this little gem - guys, treat those kind of places with love and respect. Same applies for the staff. The same guys who took our last order at the bar served our breakfast. Guys: I have worked long enough in hotels to know what this means. You seem to love what you do.
