The Ship & Shovell is the only London pub in two halves, situated on either side of Craven Passage linked only by a tunnel which also contains the kitchen and cellar.
Simply oozing with character and charm, the pub serves as the perfect traditional local for business guests and residents alike, as well as tourists frequenting the Charing Cross area.
The buildings date back to the 1730s and the original Ship was joined by the opposite Shovell (named after Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell) in 1998 after Hall & Woodhouse acquired them both in 1997. Admiral Shovell died in 1707 in the Scilly naval disaster and legend has it that he was alive when he reached the shore of Scilly at Porthellick Cove, but was subsequently killed by a local woman for his expensive emerald ring.
For the location and considering what else is around, this place is a nice spot for a break. A cozy place with quick service and affordable prices. The triple cooked fries were perfect, but the cold scotch egg was a bit over and not too fresh. Still, it's a great spot for a beer and snacks.
Lovely pub with plenty of character, staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend a visit to this lovely pub and some great quotes hidden around the pub
It is the only pub divided into two parts on either side of the street. And I think that's what makes this place such a cool atmosphere. A very nice and quiet traditional London pub with good food and a selection of beer.
This has a very relaxing feel, it's the only pub divided into two halves either side of the street. Nipped in for a sit down and a drink in 'The Snug'
So, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, and when in London, go have some Fish & Chips. I did so with friends at the Ship and Shovell Pub, and I was delighted by their service, their hospitality and their food. I really enjoyed my English luncheon, the place is tidy and well kept and if you are nearby, drop in, have a cold one and enjoy their food!
