Officially the city’s second-oldest pub, Ye Olde Salutation Inn dates to 1240.
An investigation by the Thoroton Excavation Society in 1927 found that the building sits above man-made caves that date back to the 9th century, and formed part of a Saxon farm that was later converted into servants’ accommodation and a brewery.
Historic stone-floored and oak-beamed 17th century pub, with a labyrinth of caves beneath, which are said to be haunted by two ghosts. In the evenings, especially at weekends, rock music dominates, with live bands or karaoke in the function room upstairs. Those preferring conversation can retreat to one of the two small side rooms.

I never eat whenever I go to the Salutation so I cannot give it a Food Star rating. Beer is usually well kept, though, and compared to most city centre pubs/bars their prices are quite reasonable. A traditional olde worlde pub, with the main attraction for us ageing rockers, being the music 👍🤘
Great place to visit this pub has been here a very long time. Recently visited and for once I wanted a change in a drink. The bar staff recommended a drink and I'm glad he did, it was fantastic
Awful behaviour by one of the staff. Instead she could have been so helpful in making the space available and accessible as it’s the Christmas cheer season. Just so rude to us and others that locals said their not coming back and ruined our experience of Looe. Didn’t need that type of negativity from her as we were just wanting a quiet festive drink to end our vacation. It’s so Christmassy in there so I recommend it ! But just stay clear of a tall lady with blonde hair, locals are telling me she can like you and be pudding and pie or just plain rude.
Great pub. The patron was a friendly man. Offered us a tour of his underground caves.. really worth the look.. amazing history and evidence to support it .. dates back to 7th century.. making it the oldest pub.. so so good..
Awesome place for a drink, chilled, safe feeling atmosphere and friendly staff. Great selection of ales and well price food. I was really impressed with my burger which was nearly as tall as my pint. Found out there’s a live music venue upstairs so will be looking forward to revisit and watch some live bands.
