About us

The Royal Arms is believed to be of early 17th century origin, the building was erected in 1625 as a smithy and dwelling house, and subsequent evolved into a beer house named ‘The Smith’s Arms’. In the 19th century it was renamed ‘The Royal Arms’ and for a period of time it was owned by The Alton Court Brewery Company Ltd until it reverted back to private ownership one hundred years later.

With its traditional furnishings and open log fire The Royal Arms has retained its charm. There are two bars: the Lounge Bar and the Public Bar.

The Lounge Bar is the larger of the two with good bar space and sufficient tables and chairs for thirty diners. The Public Bar links to the other and has a pool table and darts board.

As the only pub and restaurant in the village, the establishment remains the hub for village life.

As we were staying at nearby Little Gaerfields Holiday barn, we had a takeaway roast dinner and pudding for 13 adults and 5 children on Sunday 24th Sept 23. This included both vegetarian and gluten free meals. The meals were lovely, tender meat, plentiful vegetables and lashings of tasty hot gravy! Puddings were also scrumptious! Thoroughly recommended 👌 Many thanks Claire. .

Wow...home cooked roast was superb 😋 The cauliflower cheese was served in a lasagne size dish, gorgeous roasties, Yorkshire puds, roasted veg & tender cooked meat. We couldn't fault it. The four of us and our three dogs were made to feel very welcome and we would love to visit again sometime. Thank you!. 😀😘

We had Sunday roast today and it was amazing. The food was beautifully cooked, generous portions and lashings of tasty gravy. This was followed by an excellent apple crumble and custard. Lovely friendly atmosphere.
