Sorry but my experience of lunch on Sunday seems be contrary to the reviews for food previously given by others here. I had the Venison Cottage pie which can accurately describe as a small oven dish of mashed potatoes with a layer of mince and peppercorns on the bottom, for £17.00!! The green veg was served on the side saturated in a pool of water! My friend had the roast pork dish, which comprised of 3 small slices of pork loin with 1 1/2 roast potatoes, same green veg, a small piece of parsnip and a large Yorkshire pudding, for £22.50!! We were very disappointed, very pricey for poor quality standard of food. Staff were generally pleasant and helpful.

We booked here for Sunday lunch having been once before on a Sunday in November 23 which was overpriced but fine. Well we really wished we hadn’t bothered today! We booked a table for 2.30pm, were seated and waited 10 minutes, before I got fed up and asked for a menu and some drinks. We then waited an hour and 10 minutes for our food, with no updates and no eye contact from the 4 wait staff who looked very busy serving everyone else but us! The food was missing some key ingredients listed on the menu, but by this point we couldn’t be bothered to ask where it was. Of course they didn’t offer the bill, but had the complete audacity to add a £13.80 service charge for a non-existent service, (then delivered it to my husband, although I asked for it) which I asked them to remove. I didn’t want to wait to pay so went up to the desk, to be given an extremely sanctimonious apology about a ticketing machine breaking and them losing our order, which I didn’t buy, given we were in full view of them and everyone else seemed to get their food fine. The food was ok, certainly not worth the £108 fir 2 adults and a child we paid. One things is certain that we’re never going back given they also didn’t have the sense to part refund the meal or offer anything else as an apology.

I have stayed here a few times and enjoyed a couple of really nice meals in the restaurant during the stay. On boxing day I booked a table for lunch. The food was very good - 2 of us enjoyed the venison shepherd's pie and 1 had the poached chicken. The staff were pleasant and polite. The only problem was that they were sort of...absent. It was a good 15 minutes or so before we were offered any drinks. The wait for the food was long but no real problem as we weren't in a rush. However, after the mains were cleared away, we asked for a dessert menu. Nothing came, we asked again and eventually some menus arrived. We waited for an age for someone to come over, but staff were studiously avoiding eye contact busying themselves elsewhere. By this time, we had been in the restaurant for a good 2 hours, so we decided to give up, go to the till and pay the bill for 3 mains and 3 drinks. Such a shame as the food was very good and we were looking forward to desserts and coffee.

Thank you so much for our lovely stay last night, our family was celebrating early Christmas and don't all get together that often. Private dining room was superb, food and service fantastic. Hotel room was great everything you needed from posh toiletries, posh coffee and tea and your own individual little bottle of milk. Amazing stay, will def be back. Special thanks to Laura and Matt 😊

This bar, restaurant, hotel cannot be undersold. From the friendly welcoming staff, to the clean yet rustic feel. You can see that this venue has been refurbished recently, and the current owners must really care about their standards. I was instantly impressed when parked up, and saw the outside seating and rear entrance. Even on a rainy day, it looked nice. Walking in I was greeted with smiles and they went out of their way to get my room sorted despite me being 3 hours early. The room was clean, and smelled amazing.. Great modern style bathroom, loads of light and a great view of the main street. The food, both breakfast and lunch (pictured) was outstanding. I highly recommend the fish finger sandwich.. sold to me as a light lunch, I couldn't finish it all. Beautiful. I was travelling here for a friend's funeral. On a very sad and rainy day, the Red Lion accommodated, and raised the mood of all. An excellent location I'll definitely look to visit again. Hopefully next time for a nicer reason. Thank you to all the staff at the Red Lion.
