Located in the Montpellier quarter, close to the Pump Room Museum and Valley Gardens, the pub's name refers to the fact that until 1815 an earlier Inn, The Bell existed on the site.
As an independent pub we are able to offer a much wider range of alcoholic and soft drinks than our competitors. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive drinks on offer although we don't sell alcopops! We focus on British Real Ales from smaller independent breweries and also on Continental and World Beers both on draught and in bottle, which we present as our Connoisseurs Beer Menu.
We also feature a comprehensive wine list and offer a wide range of fruit juices, soft drinks plus, of course, freshly brewed tea and coffee.
Our range of Real Ales is predominantly northern based as we prefer to purchase direct from the brewer ensuring that our ales do not spend weeks in transit or sitting in a 3rd party warehouse. Consequently we are supplied by breweries throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Cumbria and Durham. Our taverns usually feature at least one beer from Timothy Taylor or Black Sheep breweries on a permanent basis, while some have further permanent listings from popular local breweries. In addition, all Taverns offer 3 and up to 5 guest ales from an ever changing list of UK breweries.

Brilliant selection of beers and at a great price. Pity we couldn't spend longer here but we'd booked for dinner elsewhere. Will be back in the spring though!
We didn't eat on this visit, so the review is just about the bar. The Old Bell Tavern is a long established pub. It has had a few refurbishments over recent years and I think the latest one has made a significant improvement. There's a cosy and welcoming atmosphere, with the dark walls, wooden floors and choice of lighting. There's background music, but not too loud. The bar is well stocked with draught and bottled beers, plus a good selection of spirits which should meet most people's expectations. The bar staff were friendly and happy to chat when it's not too busy.
Extremely friendly staff. The Burger special deal is really great value - get a free pint when you order a burger from the menu. I was unaware of this and surprised when my drink price was refunded. Brie Bites starter is tasty. Nice atmosphere in general, but on the couple of occassions I have been, people don't seem to stay long (drink and go).
Large, spacious pub with big plate glass windows good for people watching. Tables spread apart so you don't feel crammed in. Loos are upstairs. Big selection of handpulled cask beers - Hawkshead Windermere Pale, Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker, Rooster's Scrambler Watermelon Pale Ale, Twisted Wheel's Speed Wobble, Kirkstall Brewery's Jasper and their Three Swords. Friendly, helpful staff. Would revisit.
Nice pub. Order from the bar. Food comes in a reasonable time. Great burger, tasted great, well cooked. Was a bit taken back by the size, as it seemed a bit small. Saw other burgers that were the same. Guess it is the norm now. Would have paid more for full sized burger. Excellent pint of stout.

Certainly the most historic & oldest pub in Harrogate, our establishment has a history going back to the earliest days of the town’s emergence as a leading spa resort.
