The Malt Shovel at Brearton is a quaint 16th Century country village pub and restaurant with rustic charm, fine attention to detail, exquisite dishes and a warm & friendly atmosphere.
The Malt Shovel is ideally situated for a nice walk, followed by some excellent food and drink afterwards.
We have lots of space for car parking, and we are in the middle of the Mountgarret Estate, with its winding tracks and roads linking the farms and fields together. Most of the Estate is used by local farmers all year round, and there is plenty of wildlife –rabbits, pheasants, Red Kites (in abundance) and even the odd deer!.
We arrived early but our table was ready. We sat beside a massive log burner. The waitress was lovely, full of friendly banter and kindness. The mulled wine was delicious. I'm gluten free, which really wasn't an issue for the team. I had sea bass fillet on a bed of creamy mashed potato with lemon sauce. For of us ordered this and loved it. My son had fish and chips which he devoured. There were treats for the dog, baby changing facilities and a high chair, so we were well catered for. My only criticism would be my family for not wanting a dessert. Pah. Massive thanks to the team.
Really cosy country pub with friendly staff and tasty food. The Sunday lunches are well priced, plentiful & hit the spot particularly if followed by a fruit crumble. Good to see local Harrogate Daleside beer on offer too 👍
What an absolute gem of a place. Welcoming staff and the food was 5 Star. Will definitely be visting again as the food was superb 👌
My colleague and I use the Malt Shovel for our work catch ups as it's smack in the middle of where we both live! We have been here a couple of times now and every time the staff have been attentive, friendly and soon accommodating. The added bonus is that the food is delicious! Never had a bad meal here and the Pork Belly is to die for. I imagine it's a great place to meet with friends and family or a quiet meal for two. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed a delicious meal here on a Friday night. The staff was accommodating to my food allergy which was addressed before we even ordered. The service was definitely slow, as another large group came in after us, ordered, and had eaten quite a bit before our meal arrived. But we had nowhere to be, and the wait was well worth it when the food was presented. Everything was hot and delicious. I highly recommend having dinner here.

Nidd is a potpourri of architectural styles. Rumour has it that Edward VIII met Wallis Simpson at a party here – and we’ve maintained the tradition by giving our guests a party every night with first class live music, comedy and dancing.
