They also have a beer garden for you to enjoy.
Traditional pub. Food was lovely and really good sized portions. Landlord Tom was really friendly, very knowledgeable of the area and really helpful.
The Black Lion needs more recognition than it gets, and more custom! The pub is great, and once you are inside you could be in any country village. The setting is great, they serve an under advertised lunch and dinner menu, which consists of great sides, salads, jackets, pies and bakes. They have an extensive drinks range and the owner is very hospitable. Nothing seems to much trouble for them. They also have extensive function rooms, a large garden for summer days, there is also a car park with a wet fish van. The ONLY things that could make it better are pie and mash and a Sunday roast! Everyone moans when pubs close down. If you are not using it don’t moan if it goes!
Fantastic interior with a really oldy worldy feel. Lots going on at the back bar. I can see a west ham picture mirror on the wall along with a boxing drawings. There are three TVs, modern jukebox and a game master fruit machine. Phew it's all a little overwhelming. Two cask beers from Mighty Oak and Black sheep, both in excellent condition . The rest of the beers are macro offerings. It's quiet apart from a small group propping up the end of the bar. Canning town in a complete desert for cask beer so I'd say it's well worth making the short bus journey up here. I might have another beer. Cheers
Absolutely fantastic place. One of the last, if not THE last proper old East London pub. Run by a top Irish landlord and his family. Proper topnotch Guinness served here no less and at least one or two well-kept guest cask ales along with a massive range of whiskies (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, blended, and others) The food is amazing. (I've always gone for home made Steak and ale pie with either mash or chips and fresh veg with gravy.) It's really good value, and they serve large portions. Keeps you full all day for sure. All fresh and homemade, it seems and tastes like a lot of care has gone into making it to, and they are proud to serve you (the food and drinks). Always get a nice warm welcome, and the locals all seem friendly. However, this is a quiet, relaxed place most times I've been in, which is a welcome change. Although I imagine a fun and buzzing atmosphere for a big horse race or football match being shown. Bar snacks also served, of course, including Black Country pork scratchings. Will always return here when possible. Hidden gem. Long live the Black Lion.
A great labyrinthine pub with faux beams all over the place. Lovely people having a drink and great staff taking care of everyone. Good beer including a couple of casks on offer. Plenty of space outside welcoming the good weather. There is a wonderful atmosphere in here, pop by for a pint.
