About us

This boozer on the former site of the beloved Jan’s Belgian beer bar has been well received by locals and beer-nerds alike. But it also helps that the pub has had a snug, bedecked beer and smoking yard installed too. Hole up here with a pint from one of 22 taps or a stand-out G&T, or come out for a breather after one of the many lavish dishes on an impressive gastropub menu.

I feel compelled to share my recent experience during the Sunday roast service The Axe. While I understand that challenges can arise in the hospitality industry, I believe constructive feedback can contribute to ongoing improvements. Having arrived promptly for our 2:30 pm reservation, we were informed that the service was table-only, and requests for drinks at the bar were politely declined. Despite the bustling atmosphere, communication about potential delays would have been appreciated. We patiently waited for approximately 30 minutes before our initial orders were taken, and another 20 minutes elapsed before our drinks arrived. Our attempt to place another order at the bar to expedite the process was met with resistance, and it was only after an hour that we were allowed to place our food orders. A prior heads-up about the understaffed kitchen upon our arrival would have enabled us to make an informed decision about our eating plans. The subsequent hour-long wait for our food, totaling 2 hours before our first bite, proved challenging. While the offer of a round of drinks as a gesture of goodwill was appreciated, it came a bit too late, as our frustration had already set in, and we had to cancel our planned post-brunch activities. I must acknowledge the positive interactions with some of your staff, particularly a brunette girl with long hair. However, there were instances of impatience and rudeness, from other member. In my seven years of experience in the hospitality industry, I understand the complexities involved. However, the prolonged waiting times and inconsistent service, coupled with the already high prices (£25 for the roast), left us expecting a more seamless experience. I believe that transparent communication and attentive customer service, especially during challenging situations, are essential in maintaining the reputation of any establishment. I hope this feedback is received as an opportunity for improvement and contributes to the ongoing success of this pub.

We came in yesterday as a group of 23 for a Christmas party. Tom and George looked after our booking and from organisation through to the meal, they were absolutely amazing. They were super accommodating throughout when various plans changed, nothing was too much trouble. The table was beautiful and our whole group kept saying how great the atmospheres was, how delicious all the food was and how friendly the whole staff were. Thanks so much for a special night! And see you next year.

The roast was not bad. The yorkies were excellent to say the least. The beef was tough and not the greatest of quality. The potatoes were nice and crispy however they were lacking in taste. This could be either cause they were deep fried. Or maybe just vegetable oil was used rather then duck/goose fat. The garvey was OK. Not enough was given. Veggies were standard. Overall it was OK the roast m. The temperature in the pub was really cold. I already had thermals on and a woolen top but was unable to take my jacket off. The service was OK. I did have fruit flies flying around me for the whole lunch which suggests corners are being cut with cleanliness. Overall not that great experience.

Delightful local pub in Hackney, friendly chilled staff. Easy to get a seat indoors or outdoors in the nice shady garden. The food is very tasty and the chips are always piping hot! Tons of beers on tap and if wine is your thing decent selection there too! If you’re in the hood stop by the axe, you won’t regret it!

Love the Axe. Superb beer range covering a whole host of styles: pales, sours, stouts from mainly independent breweries. They also run two cask lines. It has a great atmosphere too: light and airy by day, cosy and comforting by night. The roasts on Sunday are great too. A great choice for any beer or pub lovers out there.
