Located right next door to the famous Smithfield Market in London, The Butcher’s Hook and Cleaver is a beautiful, lively pub serving up delicious innovative pies and a wide range of stunning beers
Two became one in 1999 when The Butchers Hook & Cleaver was formed from two buildings - one a bank, the other a butchers. An inspired renovation, the result is undoubtedly the sunniest pub in Smithfield - whatever the weather.
Fuller’s pubs are renowned for outstanding cask conditioned ale, but our drinks range extends far beyond beer.
With a constantly changing range, you’ll always be able to sample something new and interesting whether it’s a craft lager, seasonal ale, cider, spirit, artisan soft drink, or one of our exclusive wines.
As a Fuller's Ale and Pie House, we specialise in traditional, home-made pies. Our house pie changes weekly and there's always another innovative creation coming up next to tempt your tastebuds. There's plenty more on the menu besides pies though, with a whole range of dishes showcasing the very best of British pub food. Old classics sit alongside modern ideas, providing a wealth of choice to cater for all tastes - with every single dish prepared to order from the freshest of ingredients.

Terrific steak 'n ale pie, mash and gravy, pity about the minty peas. Bar staff were great, lovely pint of Fullers, shame about the shrieky party making too much noise
Enjoyed a good pint of London pride here. Didn't have time to eat, but maybe next time. Very roomy and lots of character, just over the road from Smithfield market.
🚇 Barbican 🍺 £7.35 Asahi ❤️ A Stunning Smithfield Public House. Located just a stones throw away from Smithfield Market is The Butchers Hook & Cleaver. The nearest Tube is Barbican which is a few minutes walk away. Formerly a branch of The Midland Bank and a wholesale meat supply shop, this @fullers pub opened its doors in 1999. This area is an historic part of London’s history, opposite the pub is where William Wallace who was hung, drawn, and quartered in 1305. The decor here is simply stunning, I would even go as far to say it’s grand. There is a spiral staircase leading up to a large dining area which provides a lovely view of St Bartholomew's hospital. On the ground floor, diners are catered for on the left hand-side and drinkers to the right. At the core of the main bar area is a beautiful granite topped servery. Everywhere you look there is elegance, the woodwork, etched glass, murals, chandeliers, this is a beautiful pub. The beer selection was good and included cask ales. I opted for an Asahi, my pint was excellent and a tad expensive. I was feeling a bit peckish on this Friday lunchtime and ordered a club sandwich, I really enjoyed my sarnie, it really hit the spot. There is a main food menu available full of pub-grub classics, Fish & Chips costs £18.95. The atmosphere here was convivial on this Friday lunchtime, there was a steady stream of local workers and visitors to the area streaming in. The service here was first class, the chap who served us was welcoming and pleasant, my food came out in no time at all. The calibre of pubs in and around Smithfield Market is outstanding, the @butchershookandcleaver is no exception, this is a top tier boozer. I would encourage anyone to have a crawl around here, you won’t be disappointed. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 07.07.23
I came here for a late Saturday lunch and found the place nearly empty. But I got a good meal from pleasant staff and expect they will be much busier later on Saturday night.
Chill and cozy atmosphere, satisfying food. Was very pleasant to eat in on a rainy evening.
