A reviewer recently said "meals are to die for" - not our experience unfortunately. We started visiting independent pubs after so many poor 'everything-deep-fried' experiences from the likes of Hungry Horse and Marstons pubs. Our first visit here was several months ago and we really enjoyed what we ordered from the specials menu. Last night was our second visit and the specials sounded quite underwhelming so we ordered from the main menu, with a few extra starters in case the main was rubbish (as is our custom, the experience we're used to). Food arrived very quickly and we gave each other the 'uh-oh - it's all deep fried' look. We were right. And the oil they used clearly needed changing. Anything with a crust/coating was mostly crust, especially the calamari, and was either dry inside (e.g. goujons) or too greasy. The garlic bread included in the 'sharing' combo hadn't even been cut (these little things count...). Everything came with 'crispy' salad so we had salad everywhere - but the leaves weren't very fresh, some were quite bitter and a lot of it was wilted or turned a funny colour - and the salads were 80% leaves, so not great. We don't like to waste food (and I can eat a lot) but we just had to leave most of the greasy chips, crusts and salad leaves. Puddings were nice but not nice enough to render the overall experience as good. The table behind us also had a poor experience and were there less than half an hour. As for atmosphere, a lady on the table next to us kept staring and frowning at us, I'm not sure what the issue was as we were quiet, unlike the group a few tables away. Our food waitress was polite enough but the young lady who took our drinks order didn't even have a non-alcoholic drinks menu, and couldn't list what soft drinks suitable for kids, which I thought was quite strange, considering there were clearly children present. Funnily enough, the dessert menu had hot drinks listed on the back but we didn't get that until after our mains. Overall, we felt like we were back in a local Hungry Horse where the regulars look at you funny. Except we spent twice as much. Which is a shame...

Well this place is indeed a real find!! I think it's independent of a major brewery chain. The food is excellent and of the Home Cooked variety. Great and varied menu. Wide range of Ales, Beers, Lagers Table Service with a smile. Prices on par with Ember inn and similar so much better value given the quality and service provided. Highly recommend you book in advance as a lot of people already know about this place. I Will be back.

Excellent pub with fantastic beer and service. The Guinness here is very good and ales are also very good. The service from the bar and restaurant staff was impeccable and they are a credit to the service industry. The food was also very good. I went for the ploughmans platter and it was fantastic. Overall I would highly recommend this place for food and drink and a fantastic atmosphere.

Excellent pub brilliant staff awesome choice of well kept Ales lagers and other drinks. An excellent range of food at very good value with good sized portions too. A great range of cobs are available too. Best pub in the area by far you are always made to feel welcome. It would be worth booking ahead on the restaurant to get a table. Quiz night Tuesdays too, dogs welcome in the bar area. Well worth a visit.
