Tucked-away old pub with plenty of character, simple reasonably priced bar lunches, friendly young staff, Butcombe Bitter from island servery, beamed rooms with wood or flagstone floors, some stained glass, epigrams and framed cartoons on walls.

This is the oldest pub in Bristol. It is told (there is a legend) about the door and human skins, aks this to any waiter while you can drink any type of bear you can think! Also, very weird for an andalusian to see that Cruzcampo is as popular a Guiness here! Nice pub, better people there!
Historic pub famous for being the reputed hangout of black beard and.... allegedly having a door covered in human skin.... Under several centuries of paint. These days it's a great pub in an ideal location for a pint before a show or when you should be shopping but don't like people. We didn't eat there but the food passing us looked luke the usual pub fair and of a good quality.
The food was great however, we had to eat by torch light as they wouldn't allow us to have the light on in the pool table area.
Bristol's oldest pub tucked away from the busy streets. Beautiful exterior and cosy inviting interior with little booths and separated rooms. One room has a TV in and upstairs is a Pool table room. Friendly staff and was surprisingly quiet when we went in. We were able to choose a booth seat and quickly order our drinks and food which were efficiently delivered to our table. Portions of food were MASSIVE for a very reasonable price, we could barely finish our meals! Very tasty and filling! They had classic pub grub as well as some unique items on the menu. It's a lovely pub full of history and an enjoyable place to have a meal or drink. I've always known it to be a place to go for a drink, but now I highly recommend it for food too!
Went for food as was here 2 years ago, and there is a nice beer garden area. The inside is large with lots of areas. However, this time the food wasn't that great. Loaded fries was ok, hot and plenty of cheese. The steak baguettes were over done, very dark in places in the outside and hard (crispy) to eat and the chips were cold. The chips were replaced when I said to the bar person. Mmmmm, not sure I would return.
