About us

Ideally situated in Freefolk Priors just outside Whitchurch it is within easy reach of Basingstoke, Andover, Newbury and Winchester. The M3, A34 and A303 are easily accessed making it the perfect location to meet friends and family.

We are also situated just a stones throw away from the Home of Bombay Sapphire gin where you can go behind the doors of the famous distillery and uncover the care, skill and artistry behind every drop of the Gin.

The country style interior features oak and quarry tile flooring, wood burner and hardwood bar.

The pub dates back to the 1800s’ formerly called the Freefolk Arms, it then changed to the Jerry before becoming the Watership Down.

The Watership Down is open throughout the week serving delicious lunch and dinner every day, with the exception of Sunday and Monday evening. We offer a wide selection of local real ales and wines to complement your meal.

We also provide 7 stunning bedrooms, 6 double/twin and 1 family room. These are situated across the original Inn and in an annex in the gardens - which is brand new for 2019.

The Best Burger I have had in years! Two generous beef patties with melted applewood cheese - and finally, a chef who gets CRISPY bacon! My son had a halloumi burger which looked equally good. Great service and friendly landlord. We’ll be back.

We a had Sunday lunch here, and were left disappointed. Firstly we were hanging around for 10 minutes before being seated despite the place being empty and staff walking past us. One roast was luke warm, another came out without veg, portion sizes in general are quite small for the price. The service charge was included which normally i wouldn't mind, but all we recieved was basically someone taking an order and then putting the food in front of us, which is fine, but for the price of food, portion size and quality i would expect a bit more for the extra charge. The one good bit of service was the member of staff who kindly said she would sort out getting the end of a bit of bread for us for our baby to chew, however when the bill came we had been charged full price for the 'Selection of Artisan Breads with balsamic, olive oil & smoked sea salt' despite recieving two small pieces of bread ends with no accompaniment.

USED to be so nice, food is now very basic… had an £18 salad that looked like it had been shaken in an ice cream tub. The pub used to be so well maintained, it’s becoming rather tatty. Such a shame, this used to be such a nice pub!

Stayed two nights here in a garden suite room. Absolutely loved the included breakfast. The food here is fantastic. Made a reservation for dinner the one night and had a lovely time. The staff is friendly and attentive. I will be recommending this place to anyone heading to the Test River Valley.

Met a friend here for Sunday lunch. Easy booking system and lovely touches in the decor. Loved the hare/rabbit on the outside wall and touches throughout the pub. Lovely big garden if the weather is good. Menu is small, 3-4 starters, roast lamb or beef, salad, fish but the food was absolutely delicious. Excellent service from Livy too. £21 for a roast I agree on higher side but when you enjoy every mouthful it's worth it. Highly recommend.
