One of the oldest buildings in the city, which miraculously survived the bombing during WW2. It is rapidly becoming a must for devotees of live rock music in the upstairs bar. Most of the downstairs area is original, except the end where the bar itself is, which dates from the 1960s. Beers are always from the Theakston's guest range.
The Golden Cross is Grade 2 listed building which has just undergone a major refurbishment with a new light and more cosy atmosphere and is boasting a new home cooked menu including many gluten free options along with a range of cask ales. A large range of spirits are available including 30+ Gins.

Great service, cosy pub and nice decor inside. Everything on the menu is gluten-free, but so well made that you can't tell! They even managed to make a dairy free custard! The food is all freshly made so there might be a bit of a wait but it is definitely worth it. I recommend the peach crumble with custard. There is also a great selection of both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. The staff who work there are patient and friendly, and made time for everyone.
Went over there for Christmas dinner and I've got to say that while the food itself wasn't bad, it wasn't anything to write home about either, it was OK, that's all I can say about it. For the price I expected a bit better quality, though portion wise it was a good size. The biggest problem was with the waiting time. While I do understand that larger groups are more challenging over 1h waiting time is not something that should take place. Maybe on a normal day it's a bit better, but it did bitter my experience.
Wonderful dining experience in this old building and such a vibe. Tried the Christmas menu and it is just as good as expected.
Great food..you do have to wait but it's freshly made so what do you expect! Well worth it. Love how they cater for gluten free and dairy free vegetarian diets which is often missed my pubs. Really friendly and helpful staff. Love it
This place is pet friendly! That was amazing, considering the other places close by just sent us outside, and with the rain, that was impossible. The food is simply delicious, and the vibes of the place are really cool, we felt very welcome. It also has an inside patio for smoking.
