About us

With wonderful landscaped gardens and views of the not so far Malvern Hills it is the place to be to see the wonderful stunning sunset. Within easy reach of the Cotswold’s Cheltenham, Bourton on the Water, the home of the Gold Cup Cheltenham Racecourse and not least, we are on the famous Severn Way Walk, taking in the historic Odda’s Chapel and Deerhurst church.

The Coalhouse in the 16th century started as a inn called the White Lion, a West Country ales pub, and gained its nickname the Coalhole from the old coal barges making there way to the old coal wharf at Coombe Hill via the no longer canal which joined the river.

People also know the pub for its famous ‘steak on the stone’, a sizzling prime cut of fillet steak served upon a granite stone which you cook to your own liking (we are known as the ‘home of the stone’).

Please also enquire about our highly rated accommodation, self contained apartment holiday let with stunning views.

Very pretty pub in beautiful riverside location. We nipped in on a walk from Tewkesbury and ended up staying for food and chat - recommend the whitebait :) Lovely friendly couple running it, would wholeheartedly recommend.

We thought it was closed when we arrived but it was just very quiet. The lovely landlady allowed our dog in and cooked a delicious lunch freshly just for us. Mysteriously the cellar was closed so only bottled drinks but my Tribute was just fine. Not sure why it wasn’t busy on a Saturday lunchtime…

We both had ham egg and chips which was excellent. The pub looks a bit run down and was serving only bottled products on the lunchtime we visited, but they were all well chilled. Service was friendly.

Awesome place!! The food is fantastic - I can recommend the slow cooked beef brisket; the beers are well kept - certainly all the 'Tributes' I tested were; And Steve and Dodger create a great, friendly atmosphere. And we came home with fresh duck eggs that are available from the bar!!! [Update - 21June2019] Went for a return visit. Just as awesome!! Had to have the brisket of beef again - slow cooked in Tribute Ale and Jack Daniels. Huge slab of beautiful beef that just falls apart in your mouth. And the sauce is so rich! Fantastic meal. And - of course Dodger came into the bar to see everyone. Thanks to all at the coalhouse inn, especially Steve and the chef, for a really great evening.
