About us

The Elephant & Castle was built in the late 1700's, a coach house and inn serving the men who built the Dearne and Dove Canal. Overlooking the canal - now a haven for fish, water birds and wildlife - the Elephant sits on the Pennine Trail, with many hikers stopping for refreshments and enjoying the hospitality.

Over the decades it has come to enjoy a reputation for good quality food and ale, and since being taken over by Patricia and her family in 2010 has achieved amazing success - reaching the top of customer ratings tables including Trip Advisor and ThreeBestRated.

Visiting family, and we came here for Sunday lunch. Lovely pub staff were very helpful. Gluten-free item clearly stated on the menu. I had baked cod in a cream sauce on mash potatoes. Veg was put on the table to share. It was presented lovely. It was more expensive than l would normally pay for a Sunday lunch £18 but the quality was there, so l didn't mind.

This one I can’t speak more highly of. The service was that I could expect in a high end London place. The prices albeit higher than the area still was very reasonable. The food I had was well presented. Since I’ve only eaten there once I can’t really comment, but I do look forward to widening my experience to comment more fully. Well done.

We arrived at the Elephant and Castle and were greeted straight away with a warm welcome and a friendly smile. We were seated away from most of the hustle and bustle of the restaurant (which we really appreciated) and asked straight away what drinks we would like. We had a few minutes perusing the menu and were asked if we had decided what we wanted to eat in a good, timely manner. We both ordered 'The Posh One' breakfast. The food was clearly a very high quality, with immaculate presentation. It's more than clear that great pride is taken in the sourcing, cooking and presenting of the dishes. The potatoes that come with the breakfast were particularly tasty. We were given some time to chat after we finished our food before the plates were cleared. We were then asked if we would like anything else. We asked for the bill and this was brought to us straight away, again with the upmost professionalism and warmth that we experienced throughout our whole dining experience. We could not find one thing to complain about or to recommend to better the service. Absolutely A-star.
