About us

Welcome to the unique Mermaid Inn, rich in history;

Cellars dating from 1156 and the building rebuilt in 1420.

The Mermaid Inn offers a totally different experience;

Sloping ceilings

Creaking floorboards and numerous staircases

A history and a rich tradition that is maintained by careful stewardship.

Experience a drink in the Giant’s Fireplace Bar and imagine how the Hawkhurst Gang, local smugglers in the 1730s and 1740s, caroused in the bar. Can you see the secret passageway entrance?

Dine in the Linen Fold Panelled Restaurant. Enjoy the ambience of the large restaurant, the cosiness of the Dr Syn dining room or the privacy of the Boardroom for your evening meal, lunch and breakfast.

Relax in one of the two lounges. Enjoy the comfort and atmosphere of Dr Syn’s Lounge and look for the wall carvings of the Catholic priests fleeing to the continent at the time of the Reformation. The Small Lounge overlooks the cobbles of Mermaid Street, which was once the main route to the anchorage in Rye in years gone by.

We are the only hotel in the Medieval citadel of Rye with on site parking – for 25 cars.

Such lovely people and a super interesting place. This must be the best historical hotel to stay in UK - a real delight. Superb breakfast too. Great open fires and comfortable furniture. Top marks Mermaid! Thank you

Absolutely stunning as normal staff are always really helpful and friendly and the rooms have the creaks and moans as rooms of that age should. Only downside in my opinion is that there used to be a dress code for dinner but now they let people in wearing walking gear, jeans and t shirts which I find a little sad.

What a delightful place to stay in this historic old town. The staff here are so helpful and provided a high level of service throughout. Creaky floorboards, four poster beds and twisty staircases all combine to add to the atmosphere here. Dining was superb in the ambience of smuggling history. We will certainly come back. A note of caution to visitors over 6ft tall - mind your head and check the size of the bed.

Lovely, very old, Inn full of character, with a very interesting past. Stayed there with my girlfriend and two others for an early Halloween spooky stay. The Inn is famous as the most haunted Inn in the Country. However, did not experience any paranormal activity at all during our stay and long time staff hadn't yet experienced anything. The old floorboards are creaky of course and you can really hear people in other rooms talking and doing other things too 🤣. Looking at the floor plan whilst there I noticed that the allegedly haunted rooms are predominantly the biggest and most expensive rooms to stay in. I am not making any aspersions though. Bed was very comfortable and very nice free toiletries provided. Nice hot water for a relaxing hot bath. Quality breakfast the next morning and a good service. Staff friendly. Nice walk up the cobbled Street to the Inn. All in all a very enjoyable stay that will make for a good topic of conversation.
