The Downgate is every bit the quintessential British country pub. Set on the edge of the Port Down common, the Downgate's decor is sympathetic to its stunning setting.
Retaining handsome original features and pairing these with a modern light feel that ensures you feel at home from the moment you arrive. The aim is to bring the traditional and new together, creating an unpretentious atmosphere where you can meet old friends or make new; not forgetting our four-legged friends who will always be welcomed with a bowl of fresh water and a treat. Lauren, Dennis and the team look forward to welcoming you to their pub and hope that you enjoy the traditional seasonal fares that are on offer.
I would especially recommend this pub for lunchtime and a drink, the menu has your usual pub food including jacket potato, sandwiches, soup, and main meals. It has a nice atmosphere inside, nice decor, can eat inside and outside. Right on the edge of the common with plenty of parking, not far to walk from the town centre either.
Beautiful country pub with such a warm and inviting atmosphere! Delicious food, particularly the Sunday Roasts and such friendly welcoming staff! A must visit
Thanks Jenny and team for a fabulous Sunday lunch. You made everything easy. Food was delicious, service prompt and very friendly. You have a lovely pub in a great location. After several attempts to have a Sunday lunch in the area you came up trumps. Many thanks Dave
Popped here for lunch. The Downgate has a nice selection of food all freshly prepared and ample portions. I had the Cod and chips the meal came with peas, salad, coleslaw, tartar sauce. A very large well presented meal and good value for money. The staff are friendly and very attentive. Excellent lunch service keep it up.

It might look like a sleepy, traditional pub on the outside, but step inside and the atmosphere comes alive. One of the best pubs in Hungerford, The Railway Tavern is also one of the only live music venues in the area; it's the place to be on Friday and S
