About us

The Mortal Man Inn is a good old fashioned English pub, which just happens to be set in the most gorgeous location. Our traditional bar comprises of three separate sections, each made cosy by having its own open log fire. Seated in comfort, you can enjoy our carefully selected cask ales, malt whiskies, or perhaps a glass of delicious wine. For the walkers, maps are freely available for you to plan your next walk or discuss your day's walking.

There is traditional, old English pub entertainment (folk music, poetry, folk tales and the like) advertised for certain nights, and there is free Wifi, board games, a dart board, cards and chess, should you prefer to make your own entertainment.

There is an informal, unpretentious atmosphere which means you can just relax and enjoy good conversation and company.

Families with children and dogs are welcome at the Mortal Man Inn.

We are both in the CAMRA guide and the GOOD PUB guide.

Went to this pub which I’m not going to lie, served very good food and couldn’t fault it. The reason I’m rating it a 1 star was down to the experience. We went there with our dog, they made a full on song and dance about how dogs are better than people and they are VIP, awesome! So we asked if they had any meat and veg for the dog to have a little doggy dinner with us and they said yes. Out comes a sausage and a little bit of veg, perfect. We go to pay and they charge us £17! Apparently the sausage was a Cumberland sausage and they don’t do doggy meals. First of all the dog meal did look fab, however our dog is a pug, he’s tiny, we clearly stated meat for the dog, yes they presented it well but we just assumed that’s because ‘dogs are better than humans’. Why we are appalled at the experience is because they said there must have been a miscommunication as they don’t serve dog food and therefore they put through an adults Cumberland sausage meal. For such a dog friendly establishment, I don’t believe they have not been asked for a doggy dinner before and therefore I believe they did this on purpose. They never said they don’t do dog meals and therefore we’d need to order an actual meal, no warning, just pure great customer service and over the top dog comments to then hit us with a bill of £17 for the dogs meal. Which is more expensive than our £16 roasts. Personally, if they didn’t offer a dog meal, they should have said this. We did pay but also tried to complain. I say ‘tried’ because when we did the member of staff who served us was on break and the manager was conveniently away. Which left us with their supervisor who repeatedly said ‘sorry, there was a miscommunication but you won’t be getting any money back’, despite us not asking for money back. We were only raising the fact that what they did was wrong. We completely appreciate we ended up with a Cumberland sausage adults meal which is why we paid for it and our dog… we have split in to 3 portions which I’m sure he will love over the next few days. It’s just the dishonest approach to all of it that has put a bad taste in our mouth. Anyway, the place was a little dirty, carpets old, my dog wouldn’t even lie down on it and tables were pretty sticky. Staff never checked up on us to see if our meals were ok but like I said, the food was good so I looked past these issues. If it wasn’t for the dog situation I’d rate it a 3 star.

We had lunch here after a glorious drive up a hillside near Lake Windermere . Fabulous location and views. Wonderful character, food and service. A new favourite pub.

Had Sunday lunch. 3 meals of traditional Sunday roast ( beef, chicken, and bacon chop ) and the usual menu in addition. Nice service. Lovely spot with nice garden sitting area for a drink in decent weather.

A little inderstaffed when we arrived Sunday but so apologetic and very attentive. Food was literally amazing (esp sweet potato soup) the only thing I would say is the pub is looking a bit tired in decor but honestly had a fantastic meal
