About us

Dating back more than 300 years, The Coastguard in St Margaret's Bay, near Dover boasts panoramic sea views across the small bay.

The Coastguard is an historic seaside pub restaurant which reopened in April 2016 following a £200,000 refurbishment.

In keeping with its enviable seafront position, The Coastguard’s new look is inspired by maritime heritage, with red and white lighthouse-style pub fascia and signwriting, complete with boat-shaped planters and lifebuoys as decoration. An outside bar and barbecue have also been installed, along with outdoor feature ‘living room’ lamps.

The interior of the pub has also been completely refurbished, repainted in contemporary colours with a new fireplace installed. There is also new lighting and furniture and more nautical decoration throughout.

Popped in for a midweek lunch, after seeing the off season £10 (2 course set menu) offer on Social Media. Portion size was really good, and we had no complaints about the food. We had the homemade soup to start, then Roast Chicken and linguini for mains, followed by fruit crumble & custard. £15.50 for 3 courses!! Service was very good and the place was very busy which added to the atmosphere. The regular menu looked really delicious, but those prices were obviously more expensive, however am confident the standard would be equally as high 😀

Lovely area lovely views. However... The roast dinners are terrible, after we've received our food they tell us some vegetables have run out. The roast potatoes are not nice. One member of stuff kept coughing & bringing peoples food out. Tables dirty & sticky. Toilets are disgusting. Highly recommend avoiding the place until they fix up in all aspects.

One of the best things we did during our London vacation was take a day trip to Dover, and the Coast Guard Pub was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. We rode the train from Victoria Station and toured the castle in the morning. At the recommendation of the helpful castle staff, we then hiked the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Dover to the town of St. Margaret's Bay. There, we had dinner at the Coast Guard Pub. A little chilled from the windy cliffs, we started with curry soup, which was freaking delicious. While famous for their fish and chips, we just ate them the night before. Instead, we learned that since it was Sunday, their menu featured a British tradition of a roast with crispy potatoes, root vegetables, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. That’s what they’re realty known for. We also enjoyed a variety of UK craft beers, and our waitress even arranged for a taxi to take us back to the train station in Dover. The service, the food and the view at the Coast Guard Pub were each more spectacular than the other.

Great location. Even if the drive down the cliffside takes nerves of steel. Parking is limited but available, albeit a sweltering hot summers day with loads of tourists coming and going. Service was nonchalant and very much a matter of ask first then receive. The W.C. was in need of attention.

Stayed locally for a few nights and popped in for food with low expectations as its a pub chain. My goodness were we wrong! The food during our 2 visits was extremely good. The Mackerel Pate, Brie starters were a sensation to the taste buds. I cannot recommend the Fish / chips and Roast Pork belly enough. They were so tasty and presented beautifully. There was a lovely choice of outdoor seating with views to France and of the English Channel. Th k you Coastguard for being a highlight of a lovely cheeky little break by the sea.
