About us

Dating back to 1862 the school was converted in 1988 and it was the first public house on the estate for over a century!

The old schoolhouse was originally converted into a village pub by Julian and Ginny Harrison and Guy and Carolyn Ross-Lowe. The pub still maintains many of its original features and creates a charming and characterful place to visit.

The Cholmondeley Arms has won many accolades over the years, building a great reputation for freshly cooked, locally sourced food. Its menu is quintessentially English and includes such truly flavoursome favourites as ‘Our Traditional Pub Plate to share’, ‘Devilled Kidneys on toast’ or for your main meal the ‘Hand crafted Steak and Kidney pie’ perhaps followed by Sue’s Bakewell Tart!!!

The pub has been acquired and wonderfully restored in 2011 by Cheshire Pub entrepreneurs Tim Bird and Mary Mclaughlin (who also operate, the award winning, Bulls Head in Mobberley, which opened in May 2010).

The décor of the new Cholmondeley Arms is warm and inviting with large mirrors and church candles, fresh flowers, open fire places and interesting ‘old school’ furniture such as the blackboards featuring forthcoming events. The pub also has six en-suite bedrooms situated in the ‘Headmasters House’ opposite.

Famous too for offering well over 300 different Gins, local ales brewed within a thirty mile radius of the pub and it’s Malts and Ports, the Cholmondeley Arms is truly a real pub ‘Local and Proud’, popular with suits, Barbour’s and a smattering of farmers!!.

Enjoyed a great morning today at the New Years Day car meet. Met some lovely people whilst looking at a vast array of stunning cars Tim's hospitality was second to none yet again. Thank you.

A wonderful dog friendly, country pub, with fabulous walking routes all around. The servers were all very helpful, kind to the dogs and thoughtful. We had a sharing platter and dessert. Every mouthful was delicious

A nice location for a highly recommended pub on most websites. They do not lie. A good but not extensive selection of cask ales (quality over quantity prevails) and an excellent selection of pub grub. The steak and kidney pie cannot be described without the use of superlatives. If you are still hungry the jam roly poly absolutely sticks to your ribs.

We went for a meal to celebrate a birthday. Excellent food and menu. Good choice of wines. Fantastic staff who were helpful and friendly. The constant breeze of cold air was not comfortable. I was pleased to have put my boots on and placed my coat over my legs.

We stopped by for a family get together meal in September '23 It was very busy with a good vibe atmosphere, the inside space is impressive with the tall vaulted ceiling and the pub restaurant fit's in to the space perfectly. I had the Traditional Fish and Chips which were amazing, others had a selection of different meals, they all looked great and all comments were very positive. Lovely place but book or go early as this is a well deserved popular place.
