About us

The pub is situated in the village of Sandiway, just the other side of the historic Sandiway Golf Course from the beautiful architecture of Hartford, and the attractive roman town of Northwich.

The attractive Grade II listed Church of St. John the Evangelist is Sandiway’s most prominent landmark, one of the area’s many buildings designed by renowned Sandiway-born architect John Douglas. Just over a mile away, across the village, lies Oakmere Hall, another Grade II listed building; imposing and attractive, built from Lancashire freestone. The tree-lined streets of Hartford also house a notable Douglas treasure – Whitehall, a magnificent stuccoed-brick country house dating from 1835. Located amidst a picturesque stretch of countryside, The Blue Cap is a perfect spot to relax with traditional pub food and leisurely Sunday lunches, along with a bottle of fine wine or a glass of refreshing cask ale. The Blue Cap has stood in Sandiway since 1716, but an even older pub sat on this attractive spot of Cheshire countryside before it. Originally the Sandiway Head Inn, this traditional inn offered a respite from the uncomfortable, jolting coaches which used to take locals and travellers through the area. The first landlord was a local man, Thomas Gardiner or Garner, and in 1822, when Elizabeth Bull took over, the pub name was amended to The Blue Cap. Its renaming was a tribute to a famous Sandiway foxhound who won 500 guineas at Newmarket, after a bet between the Hon John Smith-Barry, then first Master of the Cheshire foxhounds, and owner of Blue Cap, and Hugo Meynell, the father of modern fox hunting.

Still a fantastic place. The staff were great and very friendly we felt very welcome here. The food was still as expected for a chef and brewer. Good selection of drinks. Very highly recommended. Aslo good to see the blue cap dog still has a home but now inside the pub.

3 out of our meals we're great however the Mushroom Bourgignon Wellington no little to no filling which was incredibly disappointing. Pub was very quiet yet a couple was placed right next to us and in a very quiet pub it was overbearing. If the pub had been busy it would not have impacted but felt very overheard.

We enjoyed a lovely lunchtime meal at The Blue Cap recently. It was quiet and we could have our choice of table . All staff were friendly, helpful and super polite. They were efficient and quick to serve drinks, take orders and bring food. It's hard to judge prices as some people prefer a larger/smaller portion. We were hungry and celebrating, so although the sea bass fillets and scallops were lovely they were tiny and each scallop portion numbered 2. There was a gorgeous pea, mint and courgette risotto, but we also shared chips, as risotto formed the bed for the two tiny sea bass fillet, so was small in portion. It would normally be fine, but it was a celebration. £17.29 for this main course it was good value. Soft drinks are something else in this day and age £4+ for a coke and you have to eke it out for the length of the meal. The special dessert was lovely, but overly sweet for me...personal preference . Would we eat at The Blue Cap again? Yes....and that's the measure of a good venue for us.

Tonight, it wasn't good. Table booked 6 15. Didn't get mains till 8pm. After asking where they we're. We declined desserts as mains took so long to arrive. Daughters onion rings burnt, my beef burn & roast potatoes seemed deep fried??Money was knocked off. Waitress lovely said sorry she didn't have any excuses except place had been busy . We will give it another try. As food is usually great. Did ruin our mother's day, though. I'd worked & was looking forward to this.

Just where I needed to go for a nice drink and I was not disappointed. I will definitely be back soon! The decor and ambience were very inviting. Just the type of place you can come and enjoy on these dark and cold evenings. Or in the day with a book. The directions for parking areas could be a little clearer, as it was dark, but I have no other remarks.
