About us

14th century coaching inn

A listed 14th Century coaching inn, The Chequers has played an integral part in Doddington life for centuries. It's a place that’s long been loved by locals - but its traditional charm and character draws visitors from afar.

It’s a pub that oozes history, with age-old oak timbers, mullion windows and an inglenook fireplace among the authentic features, while hanging hops provide quintessentially Kentish decoration.

First visit for my daughters 50th. Lovely old country pub. Good selection of beers and ales. A good choice of stsrters on the menu, not a great many, but nicely done. Chili mango prawns were very good, chicken liver pate looked homemade, garlic breads were very good too. Sunday roasts were a good size and beautifully cooked. We did order extra vegetables . There were several vegetarian choices too. Far too full to order puddings but there was a good selection. The front bar/ dining room is dog friendly always a plus for us. The staff were all very friendly and knew the menu, including the wine menu ,well. We throughly enjoyed out time here. There is a latge garden too so a summer visit is a must too.

Never disappoints. As usual a fabulous roast dinner. I always have the ‘small’ roast but it’s still a generous portion. Choice between lamb, pork, beef, chicken. Lashings of delicious gravy. Plenty of vegetables. Beautifully cooked and served separately. Perfect roast potatoes . The best value for money Sunday Roads in the area. The sticky toffee parfait was glorious. Service with a smile. Lovely genuine people, who greet you like friends. Dog friendly. Very good wine list.

(Update below) A great pub. I was very happy with the selection of beers on tap. Decent covid measures in place with an effective one way system and plenty of hand sanitizer dotted around. The staff were nice and friendly as were some the other customers who chatted to us while we were there. **Update: Located in the quiet Kentish village of Doddington, this is a lovely traditional country pub. We have been back a few times now and we are never disappointed. A friendly pub with the normal high standards you would expect from any Shepherd Neame pub. The food is very tatsy and the service is equally as good. Usually, I stop off here when on a bike ride as there is some amazing countryside around here to explore and very little traffic. Will back back again soon. 😀

100% recommend! Had the chilli burger stack (can't remember the name) and it was one of the best burgers I think ive eaten, even asked if they have the chilli relish/sauce they use to buy and the cook makes it himself, unfortunately they don't sell it but if they did it would sell amazing. As you walk in they even had the real fire place going, cozy, warm, friendly and such a welcoming atmosphere! Even allow dogs to chill out too. Definitely will return

I was passing and wanted a snack. Old style country pub. Reasonable atmosphere. Missing a big roaring fire on a wet horrible day. I had a baguette with butter, ham and cheese. Excellent. Real ham from local butcher. Simple great food. Had the banoffee pie was really good. Great caramel with real digestive biscuits. Proper dessert. Lacks something, ambiance but worth a visit. Lovely to see dogs allowed in the bar side but not restaurant. It could really be a GREAT pub.
