Our warm and cosy pub boasts an intimate lounge area, large dining room & manicured gardens – making it a great place either as a hideaway from the cold winter’s weather or somewhere to quietly luxuriate in the warm glow of a Summer’s day.
Why not extend your stay at The Chequers and take time to explore the Hertfordshire countryside and surroundings. Dine in our restaurant, relax in our lounge area, then make yourselves at home in any of our cosy bedrooms.
Big room but very sparse. Nowhere to store or hang clothes, no draws only a tiny hanger for jackets. No heating, very cold. Was told the a/c has to be preset to the temp you want but could go off at any time if other guests use it. Room was quite dirty, a think layer of dust from my estimation has not been touched in at least a year. Socket to far away from the mirror, wife could not blow dry her hair. Expensive looking fittings but completely impractical for any guest staying in this accommodation. Needs a rethink on the entire layout as it does not work, like a small set of draws to put your clothes in. We had to use the coffee table as a suitcase stand and live out of the suitcase. Lack of practical furniture. On the positive the food and breakfast was very good, well done.
Went there Sat 30th Sept for my wife's birthday. After studying the menu decided that 3 of us would like steak only to be told that there was no steak as it was all being kept for Sunday ( why they couldn't they have got more Sunday morning ?). Then asked for the brisket pie only to be told that they didn't have that either. Ended up with Sausage and mash and fish and chips. Pretty poor for 7pm Saturday evening. The food is very good there but customer service needs looking at ! They did give us a bottle of wine as a decent gesture which was very nice.
What a lovely place. Food was amazing. After being seated in the restaurant service was a little slow...maybe we should have gone to the bar first to order our drinks. The new autumn menu is good. Shortcut beef pie... can't remember it's full title was absolutely devine, perfect amount of pastry, mash and lovely veg..beef was perfect
I came here for Sunday roast a few weeks ago now and wasn't impressed with the roast dinners I can't comment on any other food as we only had roast dinners. A good selection of drinks on draft and fridge drinks are plenty. Staff seem friendly and love the garden area really nicely done. The same inside the decor is lovely. Would definitely try again but try something else next time. Thank you
What a fantastic place to eat - and to stay. My room was beautifully decorated and the double glazing excellent (so don't be put off by their handy location on a main road). The staff were all very kind, attentive and friendly. The food really was outstanding - well worth visiting for this alone - and the chef was super helpful as I didn't fancy a big dessert after dinner and it was no problem for her to make me a beautiful fresh fruit salad within minutes. The breakfasts are also 10/10 as you can see from my photo :-) This is clearly an Inn run by a dedicated, caring team and there was some refurbishment of the private meeting / dining / event space upstairs underway whilst I was there - so I would highly recommend being one of the first to enjoy that newly refreshed space if you're looking for a characterful location with excellent food. I definitely plan to eat in the bar / restaurant area again next time I am working nearby.
