First visit to The Chequers after moving to the area recently. First class. Lovely meal and service was excellent. Highly recommend but be sure to book in advance.
Sadly, 1 star is one too many. Our visit on Saturday evening was so completely different to the one in October. We understand that us having 5 small rescue dogs can be a challenge and when we came in October we had a large table in the bar and had a great evening, notwithstanding that they were fully booked. So when we knew we were returning to the area, we had no hesitation in booking again, of course letting them know we had the 5 dogs. This was four months in advance. We confirmed four days ago. So we arrive on time to be told our 'table' was at the end of a table where there were three other diners who had a large excited dog who barked at ours as we arrived. We expressed our view that this was unsatisfactory and after a brief huddle of staff were told 'Sorry but that is all we have available'. We can only assume greed on the part of the management made them think that having two separate families on the same table was acceptable. We left, and very fortunately, our birthday celebration was rescued by another pub a mile away who accommodated us and the dogs with warmth, hospitality, and great home cooked food. We are back in the area again in July, we will absolutely, definitely not be visiting The Chequers.
Had a lovely January night away as a family, booked 3 out of the 4 rooms which were all really nice and exceptionally clean and comfortable, had a lovely evening dinner in front of the lovely fire in the cosy bar (although the restaurant area looked pretty good too) had a substantial tasty full English breakfast to send us on our way, the staff were very friendly and accommodating making sure throughout our stay we had everything we wanted. We opened our door early morning to listen to the owls close by, would highly recommend and we will be going again as a family very soon!!
We called in un booked for lunch. The staff were absolutely brilliant, very friendly and helpful. The food was a delight. Very fair price for a fab experience. Highly recommended
Wonderful country pub with a superb menu of delights to warm you through on a cold day after a walk. We were able to bring the dog with us and eat in the bar but there’s also quieter restaurant table tucked away. Would certainly recommend and looking forward to a return visit soon
