About us

The Bottle and Glass is a picturesque thatched pub in the small Village of Gibraltar, close to the town of Aylesbury. The pub was destroyed by fire in 2003 and re built in 2007. As a result, the inside of the pub has a modern and stylish feel, whilst externally maintaining its thatched roof and various other character features. The site currently trades heavily food led at a split of 70/30 vs drink and we see the future of the business as very much a destination food pub, drawing in customers from far and wide. There is lots of competition in the surrounding areas, so ensuring you offer high quality food, great service, a warm welcome and utilise digital marketing will all be essential to your success.

A great pub! One of our locals, we often visit after a long walk and it's atmosphere is perfect for a post-trek pint and meal. We've also spent New Years Eve there and the hospitality was top notch, it felt like a real community and family with staff and punters mixing and chatting to celebrate :)

Good beer and good selection of food. The original thatched inn dates from 1420, but a fire in 2003 meant much of the interior had to be replaced. Extended with plenty of seating. Friendly staff.

The Bottle and Glass came under new management in 2021 and is by far now our favourite local. The new menu offers a broad choice of meals and every dish we have tried has been to the same high standard. Staff are attentive and friendly creating a lovely atmosphere and the food is reasonably priced with good portion sizes. The food is delicious every time and I always struggle to pick off the menu! My partner was blown away by the Pork Belly (which he has most times it's on a menu) and said it was the best he'd had! The Bottle and Glass put there own spin on classic dishes (I had the chicken supreme) to make them something special

Having driven past the Bottle and Glass pub for so many years, we decided to lunch here today. To save you reading the rest of this review my summary is simple... If you’re passing and are thirsty, pop in; it’s a wonderful little country pub nicely decorated and restored after the fire that totally destroyed the thatch roof and most of the interior. However if you’re hungry drive on unless you’re comfortable with a 45 minute wait just for a couple of sandwiches even when the pub is really quiet. Arriving a little after 1pm the pub wasn’t busy. There were two women chatting on high stools, a group of three tucked in the corner and another group of three in the restaurant area. We sat opposite the bar and ordered from the lunch menu, which offers a range of sandwiches and several main meals. (The menu we found online proved to be very out of date.) The waitress was charming and polite. She suggested a few drink options in response to my wife’s questions. As she handed us the menus, she immediately advised us the chef had run out of sausage and mash. What a shame she didn’t think to mention that sandwiches would take 48 minutes to arrive; we’d have driven on to somewhere else (or gone home via supermarket and made our own which would have been quicker). I ordered a chicken, lettuce and tomato and my wife ordered ham, cheese, lettuce and mustard mayo. After our excruciatingly long wait they eventually emerged from the kitchen. They were in a word, disappointing. There was a distinct lack of chicken in my sandwich. I can only assume that it fell out of the sandwich onto the chopping board while being cut and the chef’s brain scrambled by a disorganised panic didn’t notice. (See image of lack of chicken.) My deep filled tomato and lettuce sandwich was very tasty but not as bad as my wife’s experience. Biting into her sandwich, she discovered it was only contained ham and mustard, not a scrap of cheese or anything else in slight. I grabbed a menu and we checked what we’d ordered against what had arrived. The barman (possibly the manager), was helpful and ordered a replacement for us which took a further 10 minutes to materialize. I know there are a multitude of reasons why the service had been so bad. Maybe it was the chef’s day off, maybe the chef was on holiday and their agency replacement was shocking, maybe the sky turned pink…. At the end of the day either you can provide the services you claim to in a reasonable time or you can’t.. Every establishment will encounter problems from time to time, it’s just a fact of life. When this happens, please be honest and tell the customer why. i.e. “due to staff illness there’s a minimum 30/40 minute wait today”. Then we can decide if we’re happy to chat away the time or drive onto somewhere else. Overall I’m not impressed at all, this is one of the first reviews I’ve written where I can’t state clearly enough -- DRIVE PAST THIS PUB --.
