The Black Horse is very much the village local although the quality of its Sunday carvery brings in customers from further afield.
Part of the reason for this may well be that the owner used to be a butcher! Mainly Georgian from the outside, there are earlier 17th century features inside. The impressive huge stone fireplace, bedecked with horse brasses, is a more modern addition. The lounge is carpeted and the furniture is comfortable, so it's an easy place in which to linger. The pub teams use the separate public bar for their dominoes and pool matches, and all those diners fill the 70 seater restaurant on Sundays!.
Not open very often but a wonderful carvery, reasonably priced, excellently cooked, plenty of choice and plenty of food. Easy parking. Beautifully clean. Only downside is it was a little chilly, particularly in the ladies' toilets.
Booked in for a Sunday lunch, all 5 of us agreed it was the best tasting carvery we have had, loads of meat and a great choice of vegetables, 2 of us had desserts and again absolutely delicious. Really friendly staff make you most welcome. Will definitely be going back
Held a birthday get together here, 25+ guests, outstanding food and service. Staff were absolutely brilliant. Excellent value for money on both food and drinks.
This wasn’t our first visit for Sunday lunch. As always, everything worked so well. Interestingly, the carvery was well managed; rather than a scrum of people battling to get food, each table was invited in turn to come and choose their food. What a glorious array of well-cooked grub; nothing disappointed but I was particularly impressed by the tasty beef, best I’ve had for many a month. Being hungry, I had a slice or two from all the meats, turkey, beef, pork and lamb plus Yorkshire pudding, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, roasties and parsnips. Oh yes, there was a host of veg on offer; I managed to squeeze a few peas on too. My wife’s gluten intolerant and the host even provided gluten-free gravy. It was pleasing to see a couple of friends from Shrewsbury there too; we’d encouraged them to book and they were having a great time. All in all, I can’t wait to go back, an outstanding meal at a great price.

The main feature is the home cooked food which is served every day. The music in the background does not impose itself. The Howard Miller skeleton long case clock is a notable feature.
