About us

Welcome to a bar with traditional styling and a modern approach to hospitality and service. Cask conditional hand pulled ales from Theakstons and Black Sheep, a comprehensive range of premium lagers and spirits. Also, being a free house, we can offer a seasonal selection of ales, lagers and bottled spirit mixers.

Overlooking the village green, this 17th-century country pub with rooms is a 2-minute walk from Swaledale Museum and 6 miles from the 14th-century Bolton Castle.

The 8 rooms have simple furnishings and decor, plus en suite bathrooms. Most offer countryside views; some feature timber-beamed ceilings, and 1 has a 4-poster bed.

Breakfast is complimentary, and there's also a restaurant serving pub classics and a Sunday carvery. Other amenities include a bar with exposed-stone walls, wood-burning fireplaces, live music, and a pool table, as well as outdoor seating areas.

Stayed for 2 nights recently, warm welcome, proper hearty food and a great range of beers and spirits. Treats for the dog. Roaring fires in a very welcoming bar, staff excellent and friendly. Pub nicely situated as a base for exploring the expansive countryside, loads of walkers and cyclists. Place just needs a lick of paint here and there but apart from that it’s a proper pub. Recommended!

I arrived at this place at around 19.30, after a ride up from the Peak District. My intention was to have a few beers and something to eat. I waited around 10 minutes to get served and was told they were fully booked and could not do me any food...there were around 10 people in the pub...not particularly busy. I asked if they could do me a sandwich, as I was starving. They only do sandwiches at lunchtime, I was informed. What hacked me off was the unapologetic manner of the guy behind the bar, I'm assuming it was the landlord. He was offhand and his people skills are somewhat lacking. I will not set foot in this place again.

Came to the area 2 years ago and spent most nights in the Black Bull and it was lovely then. Came again this week and again spent a lot of time there. Owners Helen and David we're lovely and very welcoming. It was our 2 year anniversary and we ate in the restaurant to celebrate. Service was quick and efficient, food was very tasty (both had duck leg which was on the specials). Spent more than I care to admit on the pool table and jukebox. Special shout out to Dale on the bar. Quick, efficient and attentive. Also an all round nice bloke! See you again in another year or so!

We stayed there as we passed by on the Coast to Coast Walk. The hotel was good: warm, comfortable, and welcoming. The bartender who checked us in was super! A really nice dude. But then there was the restaurant. Totally different experience. Perhaps it was a bag night, but the servers were slow and not friendly. Still, they were slightly better than the food, which was tasteless. Literally! Everything tasted the same: blah! Luckily the owner had the foresight to use Heinz ketchup, which was the ONLY part of the meal that had any taste, good or bad (it was good). I've never had food so bad. Almost all restaurant food is good but not my meal on that night. Alas.
