Went for mine and my girlfriend joint birthday. Seen it on TV and immediately booked it. The food was exactly what I expected. Welsh rarebit was amazing. Shame it was only one piece instead of 2 pieces as I seen. But then my fried oysters came then my pork with confeit potatoes. Lisa had cauliflower steak with celeriac puree. Absolutely beautiful flavour. My friend Anna literally couldn't talk whilst eating her chocolate tart. I could go on and on. I thoroughly enjoyed everything.

Kitchen was closed when we arrived. But the place is lovely and staff super friendly. Wines were great too!

Situated close to Clytha along the old Raglan to Abergavenny road, the Black Bear is not a Pub/Restaurant you would pass on a normal ‘A to B journey’ It’s a small building, rustic, and basic stone build Pub with a sparse but genuine interior (ie it has not been ‘Neptuned’ with Farrow & Ball paints and footballers wives shiny trinkets) It’s a tight run ship with the main chef quite often emerging from the kitchen to help out or just do what he feels should be done. The front of house staff are effective, friendly and interactive Because these old pubs can be a bit dark on the inside, it would have been nice to see some candles lit on the tables to add a bit of ambiance Wye Valley Brewery Butty Bach on tap plus the associated Lager ‘1985’ (which has a hint beer taste about it) Food portions small but quite enough for most people, fish cooked perfectly and the sauces and (pre starter) snacks outstanding Fresh (sometimes local) oysters very often on the menu served with a shallot vinegar Great selection of Puddings and all in all a refreshing food experience. Well done to all involved 👍 Forward Booking essential, unless you are very lucky If the dog is fed up by this point, take him for a walk at the top of Clytha Hill (Iron Age Hill Fort - fenced)

Wow! What a great place. We went for a Saturday lunch and we’re blown away by the food. I had the pot roast red cabbage for main which was so delicious! And the starters were all so good! The sardines were a particular highlight for me as well as the crispy potato skins with a whipped cod’s roe dip. The biggest surprise was how reasonably priced this meal was. We had such a good time and felt like we had so much food that by the time the bill came we were shocked that it was so reasonable. We’ve already told all of our friends about this place and we will absolutely be going back. Would recommend booking like we did. There were several people chance turning up without a booking who couldn’t get a table because the place is so popular.
