We turned up without a reservation and was offered a great table by the fire. The place was really great and the staff super friendly. The food was amazing! we had 2 roasts of the Christmas menu, they are both really filling and really tasty.
After a walk in shining cliff woods we had booked a table at the bear. We ordered 3 lamb dinners (£18 per head) also 3 drinks. The staff were friendly . When the meals arrived I was not impressed. The veg was OK, BUT the thin fatty lamb floating in my gravy looked more like a soup. It was the thinnest I have ever seen lamb cut .Not to mention the small portions. When asked if everything was OK, i said No, I'm not happy with the lamb. The waiter replied. "I shall tell chef. I ended up paying for the meals & leaving without any apology or explanation. I think this was very poor to what it used to be when they did a fantastic carvery.
Service is amazing- everyone is very welcoming and friendly. The food is absolutely scrumptious. I had the chicken floretine and it was cooked beautifully. The sauce, veg and garlic potatoes were gorgeous too. Best meal I have had in ages. My partner has the steak and ale pie, which too, was delicious. They happily allowed us stay overnight in our motorhome and accommodated the dogs in the pub too. Thank you.
2 night break at this family run inn. Check in was very easy and we we're shown to our room by the manager which was a very nice touch. The room we we're staying in was very well presented. Lovely decoration and period pieces of furniture. All usual room equipment. Only slight negative was the shower - it wasn't a very powerful one, but worked OK. Well kept and interesting selection of ales available. Food was excellent. The Big Bear breakfast is probably the best breakfast I have had in a hotel. Other breakfast options were also available. These too were great. If you intend to stay here, make sure you book if you wish to eat your evening meal here. It is very popular and it was easy to see why. The meal that my wife and I had was fantastic. All freshly prepared. Lastly all the staff were very friendly and attentive. If you are looking for a country inn within a fre miles of the Peak District you will not go far wrong with this one.
We had a fantastic Sunday lunch at this lovely character-filled and nicely finished pub. The food itself was absolutely excellent with very generous portions. The vegetarian nut roast I had was excellent and the chicken which another of our party ordered was also perfectly cooked. These were all accompanied by very generous portions of fresh vegetables and a rich cauliflower cheese. This was followed up by some - again - very delicious desserts with a good selection for vegan and gluten-free diners. To top it off, the service was very quick and the staff friendly and attentive. We can easily say we’ll definitely return if we’re in the area again and I’ll definitely be recommending to others. Thank you!
