About us

The Bateman Arms, an 18th Century three storey coaching inn with rooms, is situated in the village of Shobdon in the unspoilt County of Herefordshire on the English, Welsh Border.

The listed building is of fairly striking and unusual appearance with some of the last of the old cobbled paving outside its front.

The Inn offers a wealth of character; you can sit in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the bar with its oak beams and large fireplace which hosts log fires in the winter or dine in our restaurant; either way there is a hearty menu of good food and wine – including a reasonably extensive vegetarian menu – with dishes starting at £2.50 and Sunday lunch specials each week

There is a games room offering the opportunity to play pool and darts and to look at the military paraphernalia donated by servicemen and women and their families past and present connected to Shobdon. There is a large beer garden with seating accessed via the games room or through the car park at the rear

The inn also provides AA 4 Star accommodation. It has three rooms situated on the first floor. These are furnished in the traditional style with remote control digital television, WIFI internet access is available and bath or shower. In addition there are tea and coffee making facilities, bath robes and hair dryer. In the coach house we have a further six rooms in a more contempory style offering the same facilities. All rooms are ensuite and two of the rooms can be used as family rooms for up to two children

Room rates are:

01 April to 31 September £85.00 per room per night bed and breakfast

Single supplement is £55.00

01 October to 31 March £85.00 per room per night bed and breakfast

Single supplement is £55.00

Well behaved dogs are welcome at £10.00 for the duration of their stay - the fee is donated to our monthly charity. However they are not allowed in the public rooms with out consultation with the owners due to Bing and Lui, the pub dogs, having a first shout!

The Bateman Arms derives its name from the Bateman family who owned Shobdon Court including much of what is now Shobdon village. William Bateman-Hanbury II was the owner between 1845 and 1931 and a portrait of him can be seen above the door through to the games room. A map of Herefordshire divided into its Hundreds, commissioned by his father, John Viscount Bateman, is proudly displayed in the bar.

A popular area with walkers, bird watchers, “foodies”, book lovers and with a wealth of other activities you will enjoy your visit to the Bateman Arms. As the only pub in Shobdon we strive to provide a friendly atmosphere for all. We believe everyone should have a "local", which can be relied upon for good food, good drink and good company. We hope to see you soon!.

Clean, well appointed rooms - better than expected actually. Nice pub food and quiet after closing time so we could sleep well. Sarah and her staff were lovely.

We needed a place to stay on the road to Ludlow Castle and this was exactly what we needed. The room was brilliantly redone with charming beam and stone accents and comfortable bedding. We stayed in the “family room” which was spacious with a lovely and clean private bathroom. We also had dinner in the restaurant and it was delicious-don’t miss the crumble with custard, it was to die for! The staff was so warm and welcoming. 🫶🏻

Great place, friendly and helpful staff. Great food, nice atmosphere. Not too busy. Really enjoyed our visit. We had a family room and it was newly refurbished. Comfortable beds, nice linen. Highly recommended.
