About us

The menu at the Anchor offers a quality selection of British dishes loving made with locally sourced ingredients. The extensive menu offers 3 course meals as well as lighter snacks and sharing platters washed down with hand pulled ales, beers and lagers spirits or a glass of wine.

Situated on the Bridge of Haydon Bridge (which originally dates back to the 1300’s). The Anchor Hotel is a building steeped in history and it has been a Hotel in various guises for many years. Originating as a Jacobite Cross relating to medieval settlements, the Roman occupation and Jacobite revolutions the Hotel was also once a court house complete with hanging facilities outside in what is now the car park and garden.

The hotel rises out of the river Tyne enjoying a perfect position for direct access to the river, and lovely views. The salmon leap over the weir and sandy beaches and swimming holes are also at this point. Whatever the weather there is a good vantage point and a lovely aspect watching the river rage in flood in the winter or paddling in calmer waters.

The Hotel has a very friendly cosy bar and lounge where a real log fire blazes away. Or in finer weather enjoy the river views in our alfresco garden area and when the sun shines it shines here all day until it sets.

Food is freshly prepared by our chef de cuisine and served everyday noon ’til nine. We cater for functions and meetings and have private rooms for your special occasions, which we will tailor to suit your wishes.

The hotel has eight rooms and is ideally located for exploring Northumberland’s wonderful countryside. We are surrounded by Heritage sites including Hadrian’s Wall, National Trust Properties, The Lake District, the coast and castles of Northumberland as well as The Metro Centre shopping experience all within an easy drive or train ride.

We are also ideally located for wedding guests from Langley Castle.

We also do outside catering as well as private functions please get in touch for more information.

Hope to see you soon.

On sitting down to a table that was super sticky. It was tacky to the touch and my napkin stuck to the table. We had to go to the bar to get seen to. We asked what the soup of the day was. They didn't know and had to go to the kitchen to find out. The only starters available was soup and it would have been nice to have something to nibble while waiting an hour and 15 minutes for our mains and we were the only diners in the pub. No vegetarian options whatsoever. I had to walk to the bar twice to find out where the food was. I was told it would be 5 minutes ...it was closer to 30 minutes before my food arrived. The waitress didn't check in on us at all. The mulled wine was cold. The roast potatoes were cold. That being said the steak and Ale pie was actually ok. Generous portion of meat in the pie. The chips were crisp. Overall the food was well presented. .... Just no care for the diner's at all. If I hadn't gone to the bar to order or find out where the food was. We would literally be left alone for hours. Care for your clientele, smile ..check in on them. Ask if they want drinks...more drinks when the food comes around. If it's going to be an hour and a half late. Give us feedback on timings, free bread and olives or something while they wait. Top drinks up. Wipe tables down properly. Just show you care. I have no reason to come back. It's sad. The venue is awesome and right next to the river.

What can I say !!! Woeful service, embarrassing meal presentation and over an hour to wait for food when you are the only people in the pub ordering food. The table was sticky and dirty and the lovely view from the windows was spoilt by dirty windows and cobwebs ! When the steak and ale pie arrived it was anemic and far from appetising . The so called mash was just crushed boiled potatoes with skin on and the gravy was like runny muddy water. My wife couldn't even take a mouthful, it looked so bad. I managed to eat a little. I couldn't get out the place quick enough and didn't bother asking for a refund, but reading earlier reviews, I probably wouldn't have got one. Absolutely awful and how can they serve that garbage, embarrassing!!!

Would not recommend anyone eating here. We paid for our meals first then they told us 30 minutes wait ? There was no-one else eating in the pub, so we waited for 30 minutes at a dirty very sticky table only to be told we had to wait another 15 minutes, in the meanwhile another couple came in ordered, and they left their food and one was a salad, meanwhile our food came after we waited for over an hour, as you can see from my photo our meal should never have taken over an hour, pie was shop bought and looked very unappetising, we ordered mash and got crushed boiled potatoes, the gravy was in a chipped jug and gravy was so watery and tastless, we got about 20 dried up peas, my husband can eat anything and he couldn't eat his, as you can see I didn't even touch mine, and we just walked out, even a local in the pub turned his nose up our plate of food, totally unacceptable, I went to the bar to tell the barstaff I can't eat that and it wasn't worth 10 minutes wait never mind an hours wait. NEVER EAT THERE

If your looking for a quiet and affordable place to stay. Great food and hostess and staff are amazing. Only down side is you need a car or it's recommended. Hexham the next village is only 10 min drive. Not a lot to do in Haydon Bridge. Old authentic and historical feel to it. There is a train station. But you have to buy tickets online. For us it was a good spot. Inbetween travels. To wind down. Locals are super friendly and welcoming.

Because of some health issues we booked there very spontaneously at 10am and by noon we already had our room - what was amazing help! The room itself and the bathroom was very clean. There is a nice pub that belongs with the hotel. In the morning they serve a full english breakfast and you can always help yourself to some coffee or tea and toast or cereal.
